  2. EVERGREEN WP4200 – overview • 222Rn • SF6 • OH (full chemistry runs) • calibration of OH fields • single-tracer forwards runs for CH4 (CO, and CO2?) TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  3. EVERGREEN WP4200 – atmospheric transport / chemistry models NCEP TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  4. EVERGREEN WP4200 – 222Rn protocol • constant surface emissions of 1 atom cm-2 s-1 between -60o S and 60o N • constant surface emissions of 0.5 atom cm-2 s-1 between 60o N and 70o N (except Greenland) • no temporal variation TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  5. 222Rn surface June TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  6. 222Rn 750hPa June TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  7. 222Rn 500hPa June TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  8. 222Rn 250hPa June TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  9. 222Rn latitude vs. altitude June TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  12. 222Rn Schauinsland TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  13. 222Rn Mauna Loa TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  14. EVERGREEN WP4200 – SF6 protocol • simulation 1994-2001 • emissions EDGAR V3.2 SF6 inventory for 1995 (atmospheric increase 1994-2001 approximately linear) • initial field 1994 from MPI (TRANSCOM) TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  15. SF6 surface June 2001 TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  16. SF6 latitude vs. altitude June 2001 TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  17. SF6 latitude vs. altitude December 2001 TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  18. SF6 stations TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  19. Conclusions • 222RN • horizontal distribution similar for all 4 models • synoptic variabiltity well reproduced by all TM models • similar vertical mixing TM3(KNMI) and TM5 • TM3(MPI): stronger vertical mixing (exception: TM3(KNMI) / TM5 stronger regional convection in the tropics) • significant influence at monitoring stations • SF6 • significant difference in interhemispheric mixing: TM-models similar, but IMAGES stronger gradient • significant difference in troposphere – stratosphere exchange: TM3(KNMI) and TM5(JRC) strongest gradient stratosphere TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003

  20. Outlook • Finalisation 222Rn / SF6 • OH (full chemistry runs) • calibration of OH fields • single-tracer forwards runs for CH4, (CO and CO2 ?) TM meeting, KNMI, 12 November 2003
