  1. ORIGIN OF LIFE

  2. EARTH BEGAN • Scientists believe that life originated from non-living matter: 1. Earth was created  4.5 billion years ago (BYA) • 4 BYA • earth cooled • oldest rocks

  3. LIFE BEGINS • Random events (strikes of lightning and ultraviolet light) created stable molecules • produced stable molecules that could reproduce themselves

  4. LIFE BEGINS (con’t) • Natural Selection  favored changes in those molecules that reproduced quickly • lead to the first cell

  5. Experiment by Miller and Urey • Recreated the formation of life on earth • used molecules that were found in the early atmosphere • heated the atmosphere • used sparks to act as lightning

  6. Experiment by Miller and Urey (con’t) • Couple days later complex molecules were created • amino acids • Combined amino acids to form fats and carbohydrates

  7. Earliest life • Bacteria (prokaryotes) 3.5 BYA • first fossils 3.5 BYA • photosynthesis started 2.0 BYA

  8. Eukaryotic cells • Appeared 1.5 BYA • Led to: • Vertebrate organisms 570 million years ago (MYA) • Plants, fungi evolved and animals move onto land 438 MYA • Insects and Amphibians 408 MYA • Reptiles 360 MYA

  9. Mass extinction • 280 MYA 96% of all organisms became extinct • Due to Glaciation or Volcanism

  10. Dinosaurs • Appeared 248 MYA • Dinosaurs die  65 MYA • First humans  2 MYA
