Clarke • His interest in science began at an early age • Read about dinosaurs • Constructed a telescope by age 13 • Too poor to attend college • During World War II Clarke served as a radar instructor in the Royal Air Force, rising to the rank of flight lieutenant • In 1956, he moved to Sri Lanka • Took up underwater photography

  4. Arthur C. Clarke • Wrote the screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey with Stanley Kubrick (1968) • Was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay • Was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 and became known as Sir Arthur Clarke • Died on March 19, 2008
