ELSA - Experiment • Boundary conditions and requirements for shaft seals in the host rocks salt and clay in Germany (completed, final report being prepared) • Preliminary investigations: Process level modelling to increase process understanding • Optimization of the preliminary shaft sealing concept for salt environment • Development of a modular based shaft sealing concept for a clay environment • Laboratory investigations (THM & CH experiments on buffer/sealing materials) • Process level modelling • Performance Assessment modelling • Further development and (in-situ) test of • compaction procedures for salt grit • a binary mixture of prefabricated blocks + salt grit • injection procedure (EDZ) • specific bitumen elements • accelerated and uniform bentonite plug saturation • Large scale in-situ demonstration test of individual functional shaft sealing • components (sealing and/or supporting modules) Phase 1 Phase 2 DOPAS related activities (WP3/WP5) Phase 3
