4. Fort George G. Meade History Fort Meade became an active Army installation in 1917. The installation was named in honor of General George G. Meade, Civil War Hero at Gettysburg, Pa.
World War IDuring World War I, more than 400,000 Soldiers passed through Camp Meade, a training site for three infantry divisions, three training battalions and one depot brigade.
World War IIFort Meade became a training center during World War II, its ranges and other facilities were used by more than 200 units and approximately 3,500,000 men between 1942 and 1946.
The Modern Era
Fort Meade and NSA combined equals the largest employers in the State of Maryland—it has the has the 3rd largest workforce of Army installations in the continental United States .

Family, Morale, Welfare & Recreation FMWR is a comprehensive network of support and leisure services designed to enhance the lives of soldiers (Active, Reserve, and Guard), their families, civilian employees, military retirees and other eligible participants. 17. There are seven schools on Fort Meade: 1 High School, 2 Middle Schools and 3 Elementary Schools and one Early Education Center.
Between WWI and WWII the Army tank organization trained here with then LTC Patton and his second in command, MAJ Eisenhower.
In the 1988 BRAC, Fort Meade had to give up 8,100 acres of land that were eventually transferred to the Department of the Interior.
In the 1950s, the post became headquarters of the National Security Agency (NSA). The post was scheduled to close in the 1990s, but was kept open to support the NSA.
Fort Meade operates 5 Access Control Points with 9 Inbound traffic lanes.
In 2008 according to the Gannett Fleming Traffic Study there were an average of 34,000 vehicles per day coming onto the installation.
$4.6 million was spent in FY10/11 to upgrade the infrastructure at 4 access control points to prepare for Automated Installation Entry Technology for 2013 which will allow registered vehicles and drivers to enter the installation through automated systems. 17 Bert Rice, Transformation Office, 7-2847, bert.l.rice.civ@mail.mil

The “Hello Girls” were an important part of Fort Meade history. The women served as bilingual telephone-switchboard operators in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
Fort Meade became a training center during World War II, its ranges and other facilities used by more than 200 units and approximately 3,500,000 men between 1942 and 1946.
In 1942, the Third Service Command opened the Special Services Unit Training Center where Soldiers were trained in all phases of the entertainment field. Entertainers, musicians, and others involved in the entertainment industry, including swing-band leader, Glenn Miller, served in Special Services. Fort Meade is now home to the U.S. Army Field Band, the Army’s premier traveling band.
