  2. Speed Mentoring: Med-Peds Style

  3. BackgroundIt Isn’t Easy Being Green • Isolated from each other • Fewer local mentors • Fewer opportunities to collaborate with other Med-Peds educators

  4. In The Past • MPPDA meeting is a great place to interface with others • Especially socially! • However, no formal way • Seek mentorship in a structured fashion • Discuss career planning and advancement • Plan collaborations around scholarly projects

  5. Welcome To The Age Of Speed Mentoring!!

  6. Our Global Aim For Today To provide a formal networking process for MPPDA members for discussion around clinical, leadership and scholarly activities

  7. What You Will Gain! • Expanded (formalized) national network of Med-Peds colleagues • Increased exposure that will allow for potential mentorship opportunities • Senior and peer mentors • An opportunity to discuss the innovative and scholarly work you do • This is why we sent around the CVs!! • Chance to engage others for educational projects and research in the future

  8. The Basics of Speed Mentoring • Split into groups of 10 (or less) • Each group has five mentoring dyads • ½ mentors (>7 years) • ½ mentees • Each mentee will have a chance to talk with each mentor • We tried to arrange by interest

  9. Agenda • Think “Speed Dating” • 75 minute session • Intro – 10 minutes • Mentoring sessions – 10 minutes/session (5 sessions) • Movement time – 2 minutes • Wrap-up/Next steps – 5 minutes • Alarm will sound when time to switch

  10. Rules Of Engagement • Mentees move • Mentors remain in the same seat • When the bell/announcer sounds you MUST MOVE • Watch your voice level • Mentees should start conversation • What would you like advice on? • What do you need help with?

  11. Disclaimer Mentoring takes more than 10 minutes. . . Today is just the tip of the ice berg!!

  12. Be Proactive • Share business cards or emails • If you find someone you “click” with • Find them at the dinner tonight • Arrange a follow-up call • Don’t be shy! MPPDA folks love to help!!

  13. Timer Link • http://www.timeanddate.com/timer/

  14. Wrap-up • Good mentoring requires investment • Committed mentors and mentees • Regular communication • Mentees need to take an active role • Not all mentoring relationship are vertical • Peer mentoring is POWERFUL

  15. Potential Next Steps • Schedule a phone call with an individual • An entire group could also schedule a call • Make sure there is an “agenda” to the call • Establish freedom to email with questions • Continue conversations during the cruise tonight
