  3. Why did we apply to participate in the Kansas Rural Health Works Community Engagement Process? Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

The new Director of Public Relations • kept asking a lot of questions • The new Executive Director of the Healthcare Foundation kept asking a lot of questions • This is a rural community with a desire to be economically viable • The availability of health care is key to community economic development • Then, finally… Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

A considerable amount of time was spent looking at the needs of today’s patients versus the patients of the future • The group discussed how to reach out to our future patients, the types of services they will expect from the hospital, and how to provide those services • We came up with lots of GREAT ideas!   9. It was the consensus of those present that a community needs assessment should be conducted by an outside agency within the next year. Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

Hospital Governing Board • Key Issues & Goals • 2008-2009 • Promotion of the facility plan and construction project • Conduct a community needs assessment • Promote teamwork and pride among employees, board members and medical staff • Provide world class patient service • Implement identified service offerings and revenue streams • Further understand and address population diversity issues • Take a leadership role in the promotion of the Rice Community • Healthcare Foundation • 8)Evaluate a Rice County health care system • 9) Assess the future need for physicians in our service area Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

The Kansas Department of Commerce Office of Rural Opportunity suggested utilizing the Kansas Rural Health Options Project (KRHOP) “The program provides direct assistance to rural communities by generating information resources useful in determining community priorities for strengthening the local health care system.” Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

KRHW Objectives • Foster sustainable local health care system • Increase awareness of health care importance • Assess local perceptions of current health care services • Identify current health care assets • Identify unmet health care issues and services • Identify key issues in the community • Mobilize the community if issues emerge • Action planning for new community initiatives Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

Community-Driven Process • Community-based, not driven by hospital or health care provider • Local people solving local problems • Community provides energy and commitment, with input from healthcare providers • Community leaders represent the broader public interest Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

  14. As a result, the process leads to the increased use and expansion of the local health care sector, ensuring its existence in the future. Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

September 22, 2008 Invited key people to participate in a webinar with John Leatherman, Chris Tilden, Chad Austin, that provided further explanation of the KRHW Community Engagement Process - county coordinator, county economic development director, health department director, EMS director, county extension agent, director for the council on aging, school nurses, along with the hospital administrator and other hospital employees, and the Healthcare Foundation director (this became the local advisory group) Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

  16. October 10, 2008 On behalf of the community, the Rice Community Healthcare Foundation submitted the KRHW Statement of Interest and Application Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

  17. November 6, 2008 Received notification that Rice County was one of two communities chosen to participate in the KRHW Community Engagement Process Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

  18. December 9, 2008 • Local Advisory Group met with Dr. Leatherman • Set dates for public meetings Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

  19. Public Meetings: January 27 Introduction/economic impact February 17 Data fact sheets March 24 Finalize the survey/directory April 28 Survey results May 19 Summary meeting Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

Utilized the county K-State Extension • building auditorium as a venue • Arranged with hospital dietary staff to • provide meals (people loved the food) • Used local newspapers (3), email announcements, phone calls and email reminders; contacted stakeholders, anyone with perceived vested interest • Approximately 40-60 people participated in each of the public meetings • Grant writers love it! Products: 1) Economic Impact Report 2) Health Services Directory Report 3) Survey Report (survey conducted by the Docking Institute – Fort Hays State University) 4) Data and Information Report (includes health and behavior; economic and demographic; education; crime; traffic) Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

  22. KRHW Outcomes • Identified five task groups: • Recruitment of health service providers • Mental health services • Community-based services • Incentives for preventive health and wellness, i.e. improved immunization series completion rate; reduced teen pregnancy rate • Improved communication and collaboration of health services Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

  23. Home health care started as a service by one of • the local nursing home facilities • Mental Health Group has already • met and prioritized 6 areas of focus and • collaborated with another support agency • Used data from the process to write a letter of • support for Rice County to be included in the • application for Dental HUB funding (the • applying agency got it!)   25. Almost every one of the Hospital Governing Board Key Issues and Goals was addressed or positively impacted by the outcomes of the KRHW Community Engagement Process Rice Community Healthcare Foundation OUR MISSION│To improve health and inspire philanthropy

Is your community ready? • Is there a sense of vision? • Is there a local need? • Is the leadership in place? • Is there a willingness/ability to bring people together? • Is a community facilitator available? • Is there commitment to sustain the process?
