Test PCB

  • PCB Deflection: 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, 6.0 mm, 7.0 mm, 8.0 mm, 9.0 mm, 10.0 mm

  • Test Samples: n= 10 pieces

  • Monitor 1KHz Capacitance Value / Failure Criteria = ∆C of ≥±12.5%

No failures to 10mm deflection

10 out of 10 failures by 7.0mm deflection

After de-mounting from test PCB, performed cross-sectional comparison to allow inspection of internal structure

PCB flexure MLCC cracking

Low IR, Short failure mode

  • Summary:

  • All standard terminal (NMC series) samples exhibited failure under PCB flexure testing

  • Failure mode defined as capacitance decrease ≥12.5% and low insulation resistance (IR)

  • Cracking in ceramic microstructure (as shown in above image, left) is cause of the failure

  • None of the NMC-P series (polymer soft terminal) exhibited failure

  • No cracking was observed in NMC-P series (polymer soft terminal)
