  2. Remember! Video Eukaryotic cells are like a factory. WHY? Eukaryotic cells contain subunits called organelles that help the cell to perform specific functions!

  4. What do you all ready know about organelles?

  5. Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane) • Structure: • Barrier that surrounds all cells • Made of a double layer (a bilayer) of phospholipids • Function: • Semipermeable: selectively permeable (some things can pass, but some things cannot) • Maintains homeostasis (balance)

  6. Mitochondria • Structure: • 2 membranes (outer & inner) • Function: • The power house: produces energy for the cell Active cells, like muscle cells, will have many mitochondria!

  7. Chloroplasts • Structure: • Found only in plant cells! • Contain chlorophyll (greenish) • Function: • Converts light energy (from the sun) to chemical energy via photosynthesis

  8. Nucleus • Structure: • Only in eukaryotic cells! • Contains the DNA • Function: • The control center: contains the genetic material which chemically directs all of the cell’s activities

  9. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) • Transition area where chemicals that the cell has made are stored for transportation to other parts of the cell

  10. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) • Structure: • Has ribosomes on the surface (makes it look rough) to assemble proteins • Function: • Transports chemicals between & within cells

  11. Ribosomes • Structure: • Some are found on the surface of the ER & some within the cytoplasm of the cell • Function: • involved in protein synthesis

  12. Vacuole • Structure: • Plant cells generally have 1 large vacuole, while animal cells have many smaller vacuoles • Function: • Storage (like excess water)

  13. Golgi Apparatus • Function: • Shipping & receiving department of the cell • Modify, sort, & package materials from the ER for storage in the cell or release from the cell

  14. Cytoskeleton • Function: • Helps to maintain the cell’s shape • Acts as both a skeleton & a muscle

  15. Lysosome • Function: • The clean up crew: contains digestive enzymes to break down large molecules & cell parts

  16. Cell Wall • Structure: • Mainly plant cells & prokaryotic cells, NOT animal cells! • Outside of the cell membrane • Rigid • Function: • Gives cells a very defined (or definite) shape

  17. Flagella Cilia Structure: Small, hair-like Made of microtubules (cytoskeleton) Function: Movement • Structure: • Long, whip-like • Made of microtubules (cytoskeleton) • Function: • Swimming

  18. Centrioles • Structure: • Cylindrical arrangement of microtubules (cytoskeleton) found perpendicular to each other • Function: • Aid in animal cell division (where spindle fibers attach during mitosis & meiosis)
