  3. Warm-upGHSWT 2009 Prompt American Literature

  4. Complete an ITA for and brainstorm the following GHSWT prompt: Writing Situation Over the past 25 years, the U.S. government has spent billions of dollars on space exploration. Some citizens believe exploring outer space is an important use of government money. Others believe the money could be better spent helping people here in Earth. Directions for Writing Write a letter to convince your U.S. Congressional representative to either continue funding space exploration or to redirect those funds to other projects. Include specific details and examples to support your position. You are completing an ITA for this prompt, and you should complete whatever brainstorming you would do if I were to tell you to write a response to this prompt right now. And, yes, you must do both!

  5. Group Work We are going to rotate from group to group to read student essays from the 2009 GHSWT. Each group will grade and rate 7 essays. Once each group has come to a consensus about the paper’s grade, I will show you its actual grade from the state. Each group will need a recorder and leader. The leader will lead the group through an analysis of the student sample. The recorder will record the group’s “grading” on one copy of the essay and a rubric. At the end of this activity, each group will turn in 7 “graded” essays with a rubric. At the top of the rubric, you will need to write one of the following for each essay: “Meets the standard” “Does not meet the standard” “Exceeds the standard”
