  1. Challenges in DRIVER II Donatella Castelli CNR-ISTI donatella.castelli@isti.cnr.it

  2. Facts Information Research Infrastructure INFRA-2007-1.2.1 ScientificDigitalRepositories • Duration: 24 months • Cost: 3.4M • Financing: 2.7M • Timeplan: Dec ‘07-Nov’09 • Website: http://www.driver-repository.eu/ • PARTNERS • Univ.of Athens(GR) • Univ. of Bielefeld (DE) • CNR-ISTI (IT) • STICHTING SURF (NL) • Univ. of Nottingham (UK) • CNRS-CCSD (FR) • Univ. of Bath (UK) • Univ. of Warszawski (PO) • Univ. of Gent (BE) • Univ. of Gottingen (GE) • Danish Technical University (DN) • National and University Library (SL) • University of Minho (PT)

  3. Overall objective DRIVER Test-bed (DRIVER II) Production Driving Europe towards full unification of its scientific information

  4. Activity axes Organisation (providers & policies) Data (type & functionality) e-Infrastructure (operation & middleware)

  5. Organization • Very variegated situation across Europe • Few National initiatives • Multiple competing organizations and/or sparse repositories • Different policies and procedures Challenge: Identify an appropriate organisation, a set of agreed (harmonised) policies and a systematic approach to the sharing of repository content at European level

  6. Organisation - actions DRIVER-I Partners DRIVER-I Test-Bed DRIVER-II New partners Additional partners B NL EL P S LT FIN UK D F PL I SI DK E IRL NOR Action1: Confederation for European Digital Repositories • Geographical expansion • Liaison with relevant organizations • Framework for the identification of shared policies and standards

  7. Organization - actions • Action 2: Community Building • Identification & support of advocate networks across Europe • Promotion of e-infrastructure services to providers & users

  8. e-Infrastructure Challenge: Moving from a testbed to a largely populated and used operational production e-Infrastructure • Effective organisation, participation rules and policies • Quality of service (including simplicity of use for all types of actors) • Sustainability

  9. e-Infrastructure - actions • Action1: • Define, document and monitor the e-infrastructure organisational structure • Action 2: • Plan the D-Net system installation and upgrade • Define rules for repository and services certification • Define the user support procedures • Define the interaction protocols with repository and service providers • Select and implement the appropriate infrastructure monitoring tools

  10. e-Infrastructure - actions • Action 3: Consolidate and expand the services dedicated to the infrastructure management • Action 4: Monitor and maintain the operational e-Infrastructure

  11. Data • Challenge Scientific communication needs a rich variety of information objects • simple multimedia information objects e.g. textual publications, AV recoding of presentations, graphs reporting different analysis processes on experimental data • compound information objects / enhanced publications e.g., pairing up a graph in a paper with the experimental data that generated the graph

  12. Traditional digital objects Project Fact sheet Deliverable D1.2.a: “The DRIVER production Infrastructure “ Deliverable D1.2.b: “The DRIVER production Infrastructure“ Paper on Journal XYZ Institutional Repository Infrastructure Monitoring Data Deliverable D2.1 Admin Manual Deliverable D3.1 AdminTraining e-course Deliverable D2.1 Developers manual

  13. Compound deliverable Project Fact sheet Deliverable D1.2.a: “The DRIVER production Infrastructure “ Paper on Journal XYZ Publisher Project Experimental data Infrastructure Monitoring Data Deliverable D2.1 Admin Manual Part Part Part Part Deliverable D3.1 AdminTraining e-course Deliverable D2.1 Developers manual

  14. Data manipulation • Traditional functionality supporting the whole research lifecycle must be rethought • Submission • Search & Retrieval • Annotation • Visualisation • ….

  15. Data - actions • Action1: Complex Object Model • Extend the DRIVER Object model definition to describe the structure of objects obeying to various Object Models • Extend/redesign all the functions dealing with new types of objects, e.g. search, visualisation • Action 2: Repository of compound objects • Introduce content services capable of managing submission, storage and access of compound objects

  16. Data - actions • Action 3: Studies • Usage of metadata formats for the representation, management and sharing of discipline specific data • Investigation of new technologies for future integration

  17. Additional challeges • DRIVER as e-Infrastructure for supporting other “applications” (e.g. ETD, Belgium, Ireland) • D-Net as enabling technology for other e-Infrastructures • Thematic e-infrastructures (e.g. European Film Gateway) • National/Regional e-infrastructures (e.g. China, India) • Interoperability with different e-Infrastructures
