  1. Robotics & Artificial Intelligence

  2. AI • AI is the branch of IT that designs machinges, (robots & computer programs) to perform intelligent actions similar to those performed by humans, eg. Speech recognition, logical reasoning & creative responses. • Examples of AI systems: • Expert systems to give medical advice • Neural networks to discover patterns in business and scientific data

  3. AI, (contd) • Examples of AI systems: • Computer games, chess & simulation games • Speech recognition to control computers • Handwriting & character recognition in scanners & PDAs • Controlling robotics in industry • Computer vision and image processing, eg. Used in surveillance software

  4. Issues with robots & AI • AI is used because: • Much quicker • More reliable • More consistent • Always available • Issues with AI • Replacement of humans in Information systems • Reliance on decisions made by AI controlled programs and machines.

  5. Issues with robots & AI • Issues with AI • Robots and AI programs are not as smart as humans • Robots cannot make decisions about complex matters that often include values • Robots and AI programs replace humans • Communication between humans and robots
