  1. Bible Study August 31, 2011 Citadella

  2. Ground Rules • Informal and free discussion • Interrupt anyone anytime

  3. Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ

  4. Matthew 4:17-23 • Mat 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. • Mat 4:18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. • Mat 4:19 And he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. • Mat 4:20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. • Mat 4:21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. • Mat 4:22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. • Mat 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

  5. Jesus’ Three-fold Invitation • v21 “He called them” invitation to walk with Jesus • v19 “Follow me” invitation to walk like Jesus • v19 “Fishers of Men” invitation to walk for Jesus

  6. Walk with Jesus • To walk with Jesus is to walk with faith in Him and to follow His teachings • Mark 3:13-14 Jesus went up on a mountain side and called to Him those He wanted, and they came to Him. He appointed twelve – designated them apostles – that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach…. • John 8:31 To the Jews who had believed Him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” • John 15:4 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.

  7. Walk like Jesus • To walk like Jesus is to walk in humble service • Mark 8:34-36 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? • Philippians 2:3-8 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

  8. Walk for Jesus • To walk for Jesus is to become an ambassador for Him • Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit • Acts 5:20 Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people the full message of this new life. • 2 Cor 5:20-21 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

  9. Therefore: as Disciples we need to: • walk with Jesus: walk with faith in Him and to follow His teachings • walk like Jesus: walk in humble service • walk for Jesus: become an ambassador for Him

  10. Memory Verse • John 15:4 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.
