  1. Participation of HEND in the Program of Interplanetary Network of localization of cosmic gamma-ray bursts

  2. What is Gamma-Ray Burst?

  3. Gamma-Ray Burst Coordinate Network

  4. Participations in GCN • Ulysses, heliocentric orbit, • ~ 650 light sec from Earth • HEND, Mars orbit, ~ 1200 • light sec from Earth • Spacecrafts near Earth, • WIND (KONUS experiment) • HETE-2 • BeppoSax ( up to end of April • 2002)

  5. Gamma-Ray Burst HEND Subsystem • Size of CsI crystal: • - height 5.5 cm • - external diameter 5.5 cm • wall thickness 1 cm • Resolution: • 0.25 sec, 1 sec. • Spectral range: • from 39keV up to 1.2MeV • Continue data flow

  6. HEND counterpart to IPN: Time Profile and Interplanetary Point Event TIME & Position of S/C THEND TCEB TUT Odyssey Coordinate Odyssey SPICE support

  7. HEND autoburst data distribution system Event HEND CEB Odyssey Data Request JPL UofA Distribution to community IKI

  8. GRB020405 Error Box for GRB020405 • Observed by Ulysses, Mars Odyssey (HEND), BeppoSAX, and Wind • Triangulated to a 75 square arcminute error box and circulated to astronomers within 17 hours • Optical transient source identified less than one hour later Ulysses/HEND Ulysses/BeppoSax

  9. Optical counterpart for GRB020405

  10. Statistic of of HEND Gamma Ray-Bursts “Free space” Cruise stage Orbital Stage 16 detected GRB (4 events/month) 9 detected GRB (~2events/month) 3 events localized 5 events localized 3 have optical afterglow 3 have optical afterglow

  11. Temporal properties of HEND Gamma-Ray Bursts • time duration distribution of long • GRB in a good agreement with • BATSE GRB time duration • distribution • there is a absence of short GRB in • common HEND – KONUS events

  12. Conclusions • HEND is the member of Interplanetary Gamma-Ray Burst Coordinate Network • during the year of operation 25 GRB were detected • 8 GRB were localized • GRB part of HEND work became more important after finish of BeppoSax scientific operation stage in the end of April 2002 • farther development of HEND burst facility is necessary for own HEND GRB triggering.
