Can you feel the PRESSURE? • If you have a FOIP form, place it in the bin • If you are the first person here, please hand out the workbooks • Grab today’shandout from the BLUE handout box on the front desk • If you are missing a work sheet please grab it from the side shelf by the treasure chest • Sit down and show me that you are ready to MAKE IT RAIN!

  5. Make it Rain • Materials: • Flask • Stopper with 2 holes • One short straw that doesn’t reach the water • One long straw that reaches the water

  6. Make it Rain • Procedure: • Fill flask about half full with water • Make sure the bottom of the long straw is submerged in the water • Make sure the short straw is above the surface of the water • Blow into the short straw • Observe and record results

  8. Make it Rain • Results: • Water sprayed out of the long straw when we blew on the short one

  9. Make it Rain • Inferences: • When we blow into the short straw, we increase the air pressure. • The increased air pressure forces the water out through the long straw

  10. Draw Straws • Form a group of 4 or 5 • When your group is complete, send one person to get a cup for each group member • When you have your cup, show me you are ready for water and straws

  13. Draw Straws Explained • Procedure: • Put a hole in one straw with a pin • Make sure the pin hole is above the surface of the water • Try to suck up the water • Try again with a regular straw • Observe and record results

  15. Draw Straws Explained • Inferences: • Straws work when you decrease the air pressure in your mouth • When the air pressure in your mouth is less than the pressure of the room it forces the water up the straw
