  3. 1840 • Timber Industry erected mill on Ngunguru river Waitoi

  4. 1869 • church Missionary society project donors were Henare te Moananui, Paraone Kauteawha, Paratene te Manu, Miria Rangioke, Mata te Kurahau, first head master- Mr Stevens, ( the old timers called him Haki Paripari) first Maori students- Tame Haehlae Wellington, first Euro student- Mr Agns Fergusson, first known teacher under education board- Alfred Mason ( claimed it at a reunion in 1956) • Maori School under the native schools sites act 1880.

  5. 1870 • Teaching started, school opened

  6. 1874 • Mr Pearce Lanigan bought part of Kopipi block from Maori owners and built another mill known today as mill creek. • Ngunguru starts to progress export timber and coal from Kiripaka- many Europeans came to live and at times the school became over crowded.

  7. 1876 • A letter was sent from Tutukaka regarding the school and was received by government but put aside.

  8. 1879 • Alfred Hammond Mason officially took up his post on September 14 1879 as first teacher.

  9. 1890 • School become public

  10. 1892 • Captain Shoebridge takes the first load of coal down the river.

  11. 1895 • 35 pupils- many who rode across the river daily to school.

  12. 1901 • Quotefrom Ngaronua Mahanga sent to the Northern Advocate ( centennial book)

  13. 1913 • Mill closes. But there are settled farmers rather than itinerant sawyers

  14. 1914 • Tutukaka school opened.

  15. 1923 • The first school building was replaced by another.

  16. 1931 • Authorities recognised that the little old school was becoming inadequate headmaster-Mr S.L. Stretton • BOT Archive reported the building substandard and quite unsuited for a grade school. • No electricity

  17. 1933 • Early morning a fire broke out in the schools little woodshed.

  18. 1938 • New building is built. • Old building was sold and was removed to a site at the top of Pukenui rodd.

  19. 1940 • Assistant- Mrs V. Donaldson raised money to provide an asphalt playing area group weeks visit to Wellington to explore exhibition and other interesting places. Some children had never seen a train let alone travelled in one.

  20. 1946 • J. Maxwell- school acquired a film strip projector a great asset in teaching aids.

  21. 1948 • Tippie- tin laws out of existence and new flush toilets were erected- a major improvement.

  22. 1956 • A new road was built to access the school so that children were safe.

  23. 1883 • Miss Elizabeth Sturge was the next teacher beginning in 1883

  24. 1966 • Headmaster Ernest Illingsworth taught movie making.
