The Founding of Sigma Theta Tau • National Honor Society of Nursing - 1922 • Six students from Indiana University • STT Biennial Convention - 1985 • After 9 years of careful consideration, delegates amended the Society Bylaws to expand and change name to • Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) • First countries to become members - 1989 • Korea: Yonsei and Ewha Universities, Seoul • Taiwan: National Taiwan University and National Defense Medical Center

  3. In the Center of Nursing Scholarship is the Virginia Henderson Library

  4. 1963 - 1967 • Alpha Delta Chapter University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston School of Nursing • Chartered in 1963 • One of 26 chapters of STT • Sub-chapter formed at UT System Schools of Nursing, Austin Campus

  5. 1973 - 1974 • Alpha Delta Chapter comprised of 6 sub-chapters within the University of Texas System Schools of Nursing • Galveston • Austin • San Antonio • Houston • Arlington • El Paso

  6. Alpha Delta Chapter Bylaws, 1973 • Revisions provided for Presidency to rotate among the 6 campuses. • Each campus would elect • Vice – President • Secretary • Treasurer • Two Counselors (for BSN, MSN programs) • Archivist • Alpha Delta Chapter files would be kept in the UTSSN administrative office, Austin

  7. May 1974 • Alpha Delta Chapter, Houston Campus of the UTSSN, becomes a reality • Inductees were selected from • 84 graduating seniors, baccalaureate program • 15 faculty members

  8. 1974 - 1981 • The University of Texas System Schools of Nursing was dissolved effective August 31, 1976 • Each campus was placed under the respective administrative unit, academic or health science center • The UTSSN, Houston campus, became known as the UTHSC at Houston, School of Nursing

  9. 1980 - 1981 • Fall 1980, the UTHSC at Houston, School of Nursing submitted a formal application to become a new chapter of Sigma Theta Tau • Formal visit from members of the Governing Council of Sigma Theta Tau was made to the Houston campus • 1981 Biennial Convention, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing approved Zeta Pi as name of chapter for the UTHSC at Houston, School of Nursing

  10. May 1982 • The official closure of the UTHSC, School of Nursing at Houston membership in the Alpha Delta Chapter, which resides with the UTMB at Galveston, School of Nursing

  11. 1982 – A New Beginning Zeta Pi Chapter University of Texas HSC-Houston School of Nursing
