  2. Symbolism Discussion • Objective: To identify and create meaning for certain elements of the novella that have symbolic value. These will be used at the conclusion of the story in your culminating project. • Directions: Get in your symbolism groups from yesterday and discuss what you found and what meaning you took from your symbol. Make sure you are comfortable discussion at least ONE of your ideas, because everyone will offer their thoughts. This should take you 5 minutes.

  3. Symbols Discussion • Groups 1 and 3 get together • Groups 2 and 4 get together Directions: Groups 1 & 2 start in the inner circle, Groups 3 & 4 are in the outer circle. There should be one extra desk in the inner circle. Everyone on the inner circle will take turns discussing a symbol. If anyone on the outside circle wants to comment they may stand up and sit in the vacant desk, at which point another person from the inner circle should move to the outer circle. You will continue in this manner for 5 minutes. You should speak a minimum of 1 time and a max of 3. After 5 minutes the outer and inner circles will switch and we will repeat the process.

  4. “Burning of L.A. Chart” • On this chart you will take notes on how Tod describes this painting-in-progress. You will look on pages 108 and 118 for the details. It should only take about 5-8 minutes. You will need this for the novella’s culminating project.

  5. Chapter 16 Breakdown • What is the purpose/function and effect of Ch. 16 in the novel? • Who dies?  Harry • First human death; shows characters reactions; gives insight into theme of violence/grotesque amusement • What is West criticizing? • How do certain people react to the death of Harry?  Superficial /Dramatic(“I killed him, I tell you! I did! I did!” p. 122). • What is the connection to “people who stare” (from Ch. 1, p. 60)? • What is the “crowd in front of the door” on p. 121 doing?  “They were excited and talked in whispers” (121). • To what theme(s) is/are this scene connected? • Grotesque amusement (perverse pleasure in the dead) • Money (paying for the funeral, not being able to pay for it, how to earn the money) • Fantasy v. Reality (Faye’s dramatics) • Sex (Faye’s idea to be a prostitute to make money)
