## Measurement

Unit 1

Mrs. Callender

WHAT IS A Measurement?

How do I measure AND WHAT UNITS DO I USE?

### What is wrong with this measurement?

The Screw measures 5.1

### What is wrong with this measurement?

Missing Units

The Screw measures 5.1 cm

### To have a Measurement you must have two things:

QUANTITY-Something that has magnitude, size, or an amount.

UNIT –

A quantity adopted as a standard of measurement.

### Measurement

What would be a measurement for this volume?

76.0 mL

### Metrification

Most historians agree that Gabriel Mouton, the vicar of St. Paul's Church in Lyons, France, is the "founding father" of the metric system. He proposed a decimal system of measurement in 1670.

### SI UNITS

1960

Système International

d’Unités or SI

Built on seven base units.

Metric Around the World.

### Metric System Prefixes

• These prefixes are based on powers of 10. What does this mean?

• From each prefix every “step” is either:

• 10 times larger

or

• 10 times smaller

• For example

• Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters

• 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters

### Metric System Prefixes

• For each “step” to right, you are multiplying by 10

• For example, let’s go from a base unit to centi

1 liter = 10 deciliters = 100 centiliters

• ( 1 x 10 = 10) = (10 x 10 = 100)

• 2 grams = 20 decigrams = 200 centigrams

• (2 x 10 = 20) = (20 x 10 = 200)

### Metric System Prefixes

• If you move to the left in the diagram, move the decimal to the left.

• If you move to the right in the diagram, move the decimal to the right.

### Metric System Prefixes

How many g are in 4 Kg?

1 Kg = 103 g therefore 4 Kg = 4 x 103 g

How many mg are in 4 Kg?

1 Kg = 106 mg therefore 4 Kg = 4 x 106 mg

### Metric System Prefixes

Without using a calculator, convert the following using “think pair share”:

23.5 cg to dag6. 10 hL to dL

3 mL to hL7. 27 m to dam

4.25 x 105 KL to cL8. 0.1 g to hg

65 cg to Kg9. 0.25 L to KL

6.01 m to cm 10. 1000 cm to hm
