  3. Introduction • The topicality of the problem is stipulated by the necessity to make complex description of Ukrainian lexical units containing the semantic component of “smell”. • The major scientists who studied such lexis are Pavlova N.A., Sun Jueize, Vasyliev L.M.

  4. Definition • We can say that lexis with the semantics of smell is the words, word-combinations and sentences which have the seme “smell” and which explain or widen the meaning of smell. • We can say that the publicistic style is characterized by the combination of two tendencies – one for the expressiveness and another one for the standard. It is informational, new, dynamic, declarative, emotional, simple, accessible and persuasive.

Classifications The functional classification by Stavytska L., which can be divided into 5 subdivisions: • The smell of nature • e.g. За словами автора нових парфумів СанаїБарбер, спочатку вона вибрала аромат квіток апельсинового дерева, однак потім вирішила додати марихуану. [ дод. 33] • The smell of human being e.g. Експериментитакож показали, що для комарівпривабливий запах бруднихніг [дод. 177].

Classifications • The smell of food and drinks e.g. 3апах смаженої риби ганявся за мною по всьому Центральному Лондону [дод. 37]. • The smell of civilization e.g. Bentley випустила парфуми з ароматом дорогого автомобіля [ дод. 108]. • The abstract smells e.g. Ціна гаманця-ароматизатора всього становить $6 [дод. 56].

  7. Classifications The linguistic cultural classification by Mudriian K.V. which can be divided into 3 subdivisions: • The metaphorical lexis e.g. Актрису Аду Роговцеву, щовиступила на МайданіНезалежності, він назвав "людиноюзгнилизною" [дод. 7].

Classifications • The associative lexis e.g. Коли п'ятьроків тому в лабораторіїпортугальськогоУніверситетув Порту булистворенішкарпеткиіз запахом лимона, цевважалиреволюцією [дод. 66]. • The lexis of realia e.g. Книжковому форуму – 18 роківі за цей час вінпереріс у міжнародний, створивсянеповторнийнастрійізапах – осені, книжокікави [дод. 200].

  9. Problems of translation • To translate the words and expressions literally in cases when such translation is impossible and inadequate. • To leave the “doubtful” cases or notional “mistakes” without the examination. • To make the conclusions over the meaning of the word in the original text by the major meanings or the meanings known to the translator, or by the first meaning stated in the vocabulary.

  10. Ways of translation The direct translation which uses two means of translation: • Transliteration and transcription; e.g. З'явилисяпарфумиіз запахом марихуани [дод. 32]. There is new marihuana perfume. • Word-for-word translation. e.g. 3апах смаженоїрибиганявся за мною по всьому Центральному Лондону [дод. 37]. The smell of fried fish followed me all over the Central London

Ways of translation The indirect translation which uses two means of translation: • Equivalent; e.g. Вчені з Латвії придумали прилад, який відрізняє «запах» раку легенів від інших хвороб [дод. 30]. The Latvian scientists designed the device which can distinguish the “smell” of lung cancer • Analogue e.g. Сміття із «запахом» політики та грошей. [дод. 68]. • The garbage with politics and money stink.
