  2. Preparation • Materials Needed: • White board, chalkboard, or easel with paper. • Classroom Setup: • Students sit at desks.

The Activity • Have a student draw a sketch of the world, including the seven continents. • Have the student(s) fill in the names of the continents. • Explain there have been countless people who have lived, and are now living that have left their mark in this world, for the good and some for the bad. • They include: explorers, scientists, politicians, artists, just to name a few. • Name off the list of people who have changed the world by their influences and actions:

  4. Discuss the list of individuals. Discuss how they impacted the world by their influence, actions, and opinions. • Abraham Lincoln – Key in ending slavery; was known as “honest” Abe. • Winston Churchill – England’s Prime Minister during WWII, was a historian, writer and artist. • Adolf Hitler – German leader over the Nazis. • Mahatma Gandhi – Led India to independence and inspired civil rights and freedom throughout the world. • Nelson Mandela – African anti-apartheid leader. • Mozart – Began composing and performing at 5 years of age. At the time of his death he had over 600 musical pieces. • Mother Teresa – Devoted her life to charity; influenced programs which touched and influenced the world. • Thomas Edison – Inventor and businessman. Invented the phonograph, light bulb, motion picture camera, and more. • Christopher Columbus – Explorer.

  5. The Object of the Lesson Points instructor needs to bring out: • We have the power to change the world. • As we work together, we have the potential to build a strong class, school and community. • We need to support one another’s efforts and recognize their achievements. • Not everyone will be given an “award” for the things they achieve in life. The rewards we receive for many of the important things we do in life are not on paper; they come in many other forms. • The more successful we are as a person, the more we can contribute to society. • Success comes in many forms (i.e. how we serve others; leading others to be the best they can be; setting personal goals and achieving them; overcoming poor habits; developing new skills; building our personal character traits for success)

  6. Challenge for the Week • Find two individuals that you respect and honor; who have made the world a better place. Think of their accomplishments and what it took to achieve them. Follow their example to become a better person.
