  2. Topics • Organization of the FGDC and NGAC • NGAC nomination and appointment process • Overview of NGAC Charter/Bylaws

Federal Geographic Data Committee • Established by OMB Circular A-16 (1990, 2002) and guided by Executive Order 12906 (Clinton, 1994) • FGDC is the government-wide policy and coordination body for federal geospatial activities • Provides a focal point for geospatial policy, leveraging of resources, data sharing, standards, and coordination

FGDC Organization • 28 member agencies • Chaired by DOI Secretary (or designee) • Vice-chaired by OMB Deputy Director for Management (or designee) • FGDC Steering Committee includes all 28 member agencies of the FGDC, and consists of Senior Agency Officials for Geospatial Information (SAOGIs) • FGDC Executive Committee is a subset of the Steering Committee and includes the SAOGIs from agencies with significant geospatial responsibilities (DOI, DHS, DOD, USDA, Commerce, EPA, NASA and OMB) • FGDC Secretariat located within USGS

  6. 2008 NGAC Appointments • Initial NGAC appointments & Charter – January 2008 • Interagency panel reviewed nominations and provided recommendations to Secretary of the Interior. Appointments made by Secretary • Staggered 2 & 3 year appointment terms • Committee Composition: • 14 governmental members (5 State, 3 County, 3 Local/Regional, 2 Federal, 1 Tribal) • 14 non-governmental members (10 Private Sector, 2 Non-Profit, 2 Academic)

  7. 2010 Appointments • Call for Nominations – July 2009 (45 days) • DOI Press Release/Federal Register notice • DOI/USGS/FGDC mail list distribution • Partner distribution – ASPRS, MAPPS, GITA, NSGIC, etc. • Results: • Over 50 nominations received • High quality nominations • Many private sector, academic, State gov’t nominations • Interagency panel reviewed nominations using common criteria and made recommendations to DOI Secretary. Appointments made by Secretary Salazar • Structure of committee very similar to initial appointments

  8. 2011 Appointment Process • Approximately half of 28 current appointments to NGAC will expire in January 2011 • Anticipate that nomination/appointment process will be similar to previous rounds • Anticipate Call for Nominations in May/June 2010 • Please provide any feedback or suggestions on how we can improve the nomination process – thank you!
