  2. PURPOSE • GES’s expectations for teaching and learning. • An overview of what your child will learn in Mathematics. • An explanation of why the shift in Mathematics is necessary. • Strategies to implement at home that will support your child in mathematics.

  4. Shifts within Mathematics-CCSS • Focus: Focus strongly where the standards focus. • Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics • Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application

The Trajectory Preparation for College and the Workforce “2014-15 is not really the finish line, but only the first leg in a longer relay race to create a next generation teaching, learning and assessment system that prepare all students for a strong future and are worthy of our children, teachers and schools.”

  7. Math Practice Standards • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics.

  8. Math Practice Standards • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  9. The standards stress not only “How?”procedural skill but also… “Why?”conceptual understanding, to make sure students are learning what they need to succeed at higher levels.

  10. What Does this Mathematical Shift Look Like and Sound Like?(Math Lessons) • Kindergarten: Numbers 11 to 19 (8 minutes) • Grade 3: Persistence in Problem-Solving (5 minutes) • Grade 5: Whole Numbers & Fractions (9 minutes)

  11. How Can Parents Help? • Be positive about math • Communicate with your child • Have high expectations • Respect the way your child learns • Look for math in daily life www.nctm.org

Parent Checklist: Supporting Mathematics Learning • Have a positive attitude toward mathematics • Set high expectations • Discuss the mathematics being learned in class • Find opportunities to do mathematics every day • Be open to a variety of ways to solve a problem • Work on puzzles and other engaging mathematics problems • Discuss the mathematics found in sports statistics and other • real-world applications of mathematics • Use computers and calculators, as well as pencil and paper, to solve problems • Discuss why (or why not) an answer to a mathematics problem is reasonable • Practice memorized facts • Monitor homework • Make mistakes a part of learning • Encourage enrollment in challenging courses
