  1. Nigerian Colonialism By: Zipporah McNeil

  2. Overview • Nigeria is the most populated country located in West Africa. It is considered to be a rich country of its copious amounts of natural resources and raw materials.

  3. The Beginning • In the 1500s, the British came to Africa and interrupted the Nigerians way of life. They British taught them their ways of life such as: their religion, Christianity, their education, and most importantly, their language, English.

  4. Division • In the 1800s, the British took over and divided Nigeria into regions. Since the British wanted to expand their ways of life, it did not matter to them how it affected the people of Nigeria.

  5. Effects • The Nigerian tribal groups were emerged together and some Nigerians were sold and thrown into slavery to other countries.

  6. Independence • British gave back the independence of Nigeria in 1960, but with the leaders not being in control for a long period of time, the government was clueless on how to run their country again.

  7. Problems • The Nigerian leaders faced many problems along the way of gaining control over their country again. They did not know whether to change the way of life they had been taught for so many years or keep it, whether to keep the name of Nigeria, etc.

  8. Repercussions • During the colonization of Nigeria, the economy was down because the raw materials and natural resource were shipped to the West overseas.

  9. Current • Today, Nigeria is still affected. When the British came to colonize, they grouped thy different ethnic groups, although they did not want to be. Now, there is bloodshed and confrontations between them.
