Keynote: Dr. Katherine LoflinPlacemaking – Soul of the Community and BeyondIn a multi-year, multi-city study led by Dr. Loflin called "The Soul of the Community," nearly 43,000 people in 26 communities across the United States indicated the three main factors that describe why they have become attached to, and stay in, a community. The three factors are aesthetic beauty, the opportunities for socializing that the place provides, and its openness. This attachment improves a community's economic prospects-people who are more attached to a place tend to work harder, spend more locally, and are more entrepreneurial, and places worth attaching to are able to attract and retain a more talented workforce, which in turn attracts more business.

Trends and Innovation in Economic DevelopmentProfessor at the University of Kentucky with appointments in the Department of Agricultural Economics and in the Martin School of Public Administration and Public Policy. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Geography at Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada.
In 2009, he was Head of the Rural Development Programme at the OECD in Paris, France. He holds a BA in Economics from Brock University, an MA in Economics from McMaster University and a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University.

Regional Leadership and Strategy – A Case StudyBorn in Fredericton in 1948, Mayor Woodside was first elected to City Council in 1981. After two terms as councillor, he was elected mayor in 1986, serving five straight terms before resigning in 1999. He was returned as mayor in 2004, and on May 12, 2008, was re-elected for a record seventh term to become the longest-serving mayor of Fredericton.
Mayor Woodside has an honourary doctor of laws degree from St. Thomas University.

Developing a Charter for Urban Municipal Economic DevelopmentRob holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Business Studies from the University of Warwick, England, which he attended as a Commonwealth Scholar and an Institute of Social and Economic Research Doctoral Fellow.
He has taught, consulted, published and presented extensively on community economic and regional development, strategic economic planning, sectoral and cluster development, and knowledge mobilization.
