INQUIRING ABOUT INTERNATIONAL CAUSE OF DEATH STATISTICS /1 • Study visits in Europe • Italy, France, Scotland and Sweden • Review of articles published by Eurostat • Final Report on Automated Coding in Member States (1998) • Comparability and Quality Improvement of European Causes of Death Statistics (2001)

  5. INQUIRING ABOUT INTERNATIONAL CAUSE OF DEATH STATISTICS /2 • Training courses presented by the NCHS • Underlying Cause, Multiple Cause and PC-manager Seminars (North-Carolina) • ICD-10 Mortality Coding, Classification, and Analysis Concepts for Statisticians and Epidemiologist (Budapest)

  6. STUDY OF THE HUNGARIAN CAUSE OF DEATH STATISTICS • Summary of International experiences and description of the Hungarian practice • Recommendations on the development strategy

  7. DEVELOPMENT AREAS • Revision of the form of Death Certificate • Preliminary quality control on causes of death data • Training of data suppliers • IT development for automated coding

  8. REVISION OF THE FORM OF DEATH CERTIFICATE Requirements: • International form • EUROSTAT recommendations • Providing sufficient information for automated coding

  9. PRELIMINARY QUALITY CONTROL ON CAUSES OF DEATH DATA • Motivation: Obtaining properly completed certificates before data entry • Activity: Collaboration of Local Statistical Offices and the Local Medical Officer • Objective: Preparation of a comprehensive quality control system

  10. TRAINING OF DATA SUPPLIERS • Manual on certification- a common publication of the Medical University of Pecs and the HCSO • Adaptation of the EU-Training Package on Certification of Causes of Death

  11. IT-DEVELOPMENT FOR AUTOMATED CODING • Integration of ACME into the HCSO ORACLE database • Collection of medical terms and programming of automated coding of literal text

  12. FUTURE PLANS • Coders’ training for automated coding • Introduction of automated coding in 2005 • Double coding of death certificates and bridge-coding analysis
