  1. Incongruous • Adj. Being out of place, absurd, or not of keeping • The sight of cacti at the beach was an incongruous scene, and it left me feeling confused and uneasy.

  2. Gullible • Adj. Easily tricked, too trusting • Jim tricked his gullible little brother into eating a spicy pepper that Jim said tasted like candy.

  3. Servile • Adj. Being submissive or slave like • The servile maid praised the king and did whatever he asked without question.

  4. Resolute • Adj. Being firm in purpose, determined. • The colonel was resolute in his promise to protect his squadron and his country from the enemy.

  5. Abridge • V. To shorten by using fewer words • Because the student was running out of time, he decided to abridge his presentation and only talk about the most important details.
