  2. About his birth. • He was born October 10th1917. • Birthplace was Rocky Mt. North Carolina.

  3. MONK’S life • Began playing piano at age 6.After some training, he was self taught. Teen years… • He attended Stuyvest HS, but did not graduate. In his late teens he began finding work playing jazz. He played piano at Mintons Playhouse a Manhatten club. • He died in Englewood N.J.

  4. Type of Music • Modern jazz pianist. • Played some Bebop. • He also was… a composer!

  5. OIF! (Other interesting facts). Among his best known works are “Well You Needn’t”, “I Mean You”, “Straight, No Chaser”, “Criss-Cross”, “Mysterioso”, “Epistrophy”, “Blue Monk” and “Round Midnight”. His style was described as hard-swinging. He married Nellie Smith, and later on had a daughter named Barbara.
