  1. A Lesson on Slope

  2. Imagine yourself...

  3. A) icy road ahead B) steep road ahead C) curvy road ahead D) trucks entering highway ahead What is the meaning of this sign? Hear the answer.

  4. ObjectivesThe student will be able to: 1) define slope as “rise over run.” 2) explain how to determine the slope of a staircase or a handicap ramp. Hear the objectives.

  5. Slope is the steepness of a line. It can also be defined as rise over run (vertical change over horizontal change). Example Given the ordered pairs (-2, -2) and (4, 1), find the slope of the line that passes through these points.

  6. 6 3 Determine the slope of the line. Graph the points (-2, -2) and (4, 1) and apply “rise over run”. rise/run = 3/6 = 1/2 Hear an explanation.

  7. How would you determine the slope of the staircase? Hear an explanation.

  8. How would you determine if the slope of the ramp below is legal? Time for your job interview! Legally, handicap ramps cannot rise more than 1 inch for every 12 inches of run. Hear an explanation.

  9. Real World Application Complete the Slope for the Mathematically Inclined Worksheet.
