Program Basics • July 24- Aug 25, 2016 • UMD – 2 days pre departure/2 days post return • Johannesburg - 10 days • Limpopo Province - 17 days • 6 credits (may also have UPS approval) • Accommodations: • Johannesburg: B&B • Limpopo: combination of university dorms and home stays • No health concerns • Program costs: $3700 • Estimates airfare: $1500-$2000

  5. Program Theme Social Inequality Post-Apartheid : racial inequality : gender : class : sexuality : ethnicity, language, religion : geographical location

Expectations of Students • Full engagement with all aspects of the course • Readings (books and articles) throughout course • Daily critical feedback sessions with program directors • Regular blog posts or journal on reflections of activities • Independent research project that has a urban/rural comparative perspective • Health care/HIV • Crime • Education • Gender Issues • Tourism • Entrepreneurship • Maintaining cultural practices

  7. Johannesburg • Visits/in-depth discussion to key struggle sites • Service learning with NGOs • Series of lectures from various academics and practitioners • Interactive learning sessions with South African undergrad students

  8. Limpopo Province • Series of lectures on a range of topics by academics, practitioners, community members, etc. • Participant observation exercises • Visit to the Kruger National Park
