  2. Write the sentences w/ the correct Punctuation • Mom I said • I was... I was going for a rock, and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set I said • I was I said I was going for a rock and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set • Oh my goodness we have to get you to the hospital mom said

  3. Here’s the correct punctuation • “Mom!” I said. • “I was... I was going for a rock, and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set,” I said. • “I was.” I said, “I was going for a rock, and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set.” • “Oh my goodness! We have to get you to the hospital,” mom said.

  4. Now change the reporting verb (said) • “Mom!” I said. • “I was. I was going for a rock, and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set,” I said. • “I was.” I said, “I was going for a rock, and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set.” • “Oh my goodness! We have to get you to the hospital,” mom said.

  5. Here’s one possibility • “Mom!” I yelled. • “I was. I was going for a rock, and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set,” I cried. • “I was.” I cried, “I was going for a rock, and Matt hit me in the head with the swing set.” • “Oh my goodness! We have to get you to the hospital,” mom howled.

  6. Version 1 • “I think I want to take a ride on the jet ski,” Sarah snickered. • “You can hop on the back with me if you want!” I exclaimed. • “I’ve seen how you drive. You’re crazy!” Sarah shouted fearfully. • “Trust me!” I assured. • “Hang on!” I yelled.

  7. Version 2 • “I think I want to take a ride on the jet ski,” Sarah questioned herself. • “You can hop on the back with me if you want,” I offered. • “I’ve seen how you drive; you’re crazy” Sarah hesitated. • “Trust me,” I told her. • “Hang on!” I said through a grin.

  8. Version 3 • “I think I want to take a ride on the jet ski,” Sarah said nervously. • “You can hop on the back with me if you want,” I offered. • “I’ve seen how you drive. You’re crazy!” Sarah pointed out. • “Trust me!” I assured her. • “Hang on!” I hollered.

  12. “Use a word other than said,” said Mr. Schutz.

  13. Tags • “Tag dialogue at the end,” Mr. Schutz suggested. • Mr. Schutz advised, “You can also tag dialogue before the quote.” • “It would also be a nice touch,” Mr. Schutz explained, “to split a quote and tag dialogue in the middle.”
