  2. Livestock census • The livestock census is a primary source of data for livestock sector. • The main livelihood source and the wealth is livestock in Mongolia. • Thus, has been conducting livestock census.

  3. ●In 1918 the livestock census was conducted firstly, it was not conducted by united management, general methodology and plan. ●Since 1924, when statistical organization was established, livestock census conducted using general methodology, indicators and plan.● Since 1961 it has been conducted in December. The advantage this period is that it conforms to livestock production year. Historical background on livestock census

  4. Period of the census ●Livestock census is conducted every year. ● The census conducts during 10 days from December 7 to December 17 . ● The Government issued period of the livestock census.

  5. Scope of the livestock census • The livestock census covers all households and units with herds in the country. • During livestock census each households and units are interviewed using questionnaires

  6. Principles of Livestock census ● The livestock census begins and ends at the same period throughout country. ● Animals should be counted one by one.

  7. Main indicators of livestock census: - Number of livestock, by type, sex and age • Income and expenditure of livestock • Number of breeding stock • Income and expenditure of young animals • Number of household with livestock • Number of herdsmen household, by household member • Number of herdsmen, by age and sex • Number of domestic animals • Production of domestic animals • Some social indicators of herdsmen households • Produced and prepared fodder by household • Number of wells and fences

  11. Disadvantages of Livestock census • Livestock census is very costly. • Census results represent only livestock sector’s number of livestock • Some important livestock indicators such as production, assets, food security, grassland of livestock are not included

  12. Future plan • To expand livestock census into agricultural census, conduct census in every 3 years • To research possibility of sample survey approach • To learn international methodology and practice
