  2. Warfare • William the Conqueror lead a army of Norman knights to England. • He defeated Harold’s army • At first the English resisted his rule.

  3. Religion Church officials were to be free of royal control Clergy was to be tried into the church People believed that church officials should be tried into the king’s court

  4. Trade/ Economy • In 1086, William the Conqueror took a survey of the land to tax people correctly. • To keep this information he published a book called the Doomsday Book. • After he died Henry the second ruled. • He set up a central royal court. • Circuit judges brought the land together by giving everyone equal laws. • When Henry died in 1189 his oldest son Richard became king.

  5. Trade/Economy Continued • When Richard died John, his brother, became king. • He ignored the law and the nobles started to get mad. • The nobles were so angry they forced him to sign the Magna Carta. • The Magna Carta took away some of the kings power and increased the nobles power.

  6. Vocabulary • Circuit Judges- Judges who traveled through the countries. • Grand Jury- A group of people who present the judges the people suspected in crimes. • Trial Jury- A group of people who decided whether a person in innocent or guilty.
