  3. The Source of All Energy • The sun • As simple as it may seem, the sun is the source of all life • Without it, the most basic forms of life would not exist

  4. Energy Flow Key Terms • Autotroph • Producer • Photosynthesis • Heterotroph • Consumer • Herbivore • Carnivore • Omnivore • Decomposer • Food web • Trophic level • Ecological pyramid • Biomass

  5. Autotrophs • Plants • Some algae • Certain bacteria • Can capture energy from the sun or chemicals and use it to produce food. • Lowest part of the cycle • Also known as producers due to self made food

  6. Photosynthesis • Autotrophs capture solar energy through the process of photosynthesis. • CO2 + H2O + photons → C6H12O6 + O2

  7. Heterotrophs Different types of heterotrophs: • Herbivores - Vegetation • Omnivores - Meat and Vegetation • Carnivores - Meat • Detritivores - Decaying organic matter • Organisms that rely on other organisms to survive • Known as consumers • Cannot acquire energy from the sun • Energy flows from sun to organism to organism

  8. Energy Flow • Energy flows through the ecosystem in one direction • Flows from the sun to autotrophs and then to heterotrophs

  9. Energy Flow • Food chain - organisms transferring energy by eating or being eaten • The energy stored by producers is passed along through the food chain.

  10. Energy Flow • In most ecosystems the relationships are more complex • These more complex relationships are defined as food webs.

  11. Energy Flow • The ecological pyramidshows the relative amounts of energy or matter. • Producers make up the first level • Consumers make up the second, third and higher

  12. Energy Flow • Only about 10% of the energy available within one trophic level is transferred to organisms at the next trophic level. • Biomass is the total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level.
