  2. Homework: • Read AR book 30 minutes and get parent’s signature • Bring AR book to class tomorrow • Review Cornell Notes (Nonfiction Unit Vocabulary)

  3. IB Frameworks: IB Areas of Interaction: Approaches to Learning – Students will examine their approach to learning the information presented in this unit. IB Learner Profile: Communicators – students will use nonfiction vocabulary terms throughout their learning during this unit.

  4. Warm-Up: Do I communicate with people of other cultures? Why or why not?

  5. Lesson Guiding Question: What vocabulary would I need to know to conduct effective nonfiction research?

  6. Opening: Students will review and discuss the Georgia Performance Standard - ELA7R2.d: Determines word meanings through the use of definition, example, restatement, or contrast.

  7. Work Session: Students will write Analyzing and Creating Nonfiction Unit Vocabulary Cornell Notes.

  8. Nonfiction Unit Vocabulary Extraneous – not belonging or proper to a thing. Inappropriate information - information which does not suit the context of the research. Organizational pattern – the way research information is presented. Composition – an act of producing a literary work; an essay.

  9. Nonfiction Unit Vocabulary Identify – to recognize as being a particular person or thing. Inquiry – a seeking for truth; a question. Investigation – detailed or careful examination (observation). Research – investigation into a subject to discover facts.

  10. Nonfiction Unit Vocabulary Credit – acknowledgement for using literary work. Quoted – to repeat (a passage, phrase, etc) from a book or speech. Paraphrase – the process of restating or rewording. Consistently – constantly.

  11. Nonfiction Unit Vocabulary Methodology – a set of methods or rules. Citations – a quotation showing a particular phrase. Document – a written or printed paper with information. Sources – a thing or place from which information is found (books, internet, etc.). Electronic media – electronic means of communication (online newspapers, online journals, online encyclopedias, television, etc).

  12. Work Session Continued… Students will complete a Vocabulary Card for 10 Nonfiction Unit Vocabulary words.

  14. Closing: Students will participate in a review all of the Nonfiction Vocabulary Unit Cornell Notes.
