In vv. 7 and following, He tries to explain that He is the visible manifestation of the Father. ~ They should have already known the Father because of their relationship with the Son. ~ In one sense it was true that the disciples did not know: they had not paid sufficient attention to the words of Jesus!

  3. ~ As highly as they think of Jesus, they do not yet grasp that in Jesus God has made Himself known. ~ Note “My Father,” which indicates Christ’s unique sonship (see Jn 1:14). Read Jn 14:7b. Jesus shifted the questioning from the future to the present.

  4. ~ Instead of being preoccupied with Jesus’ going and how they could get there, they were to realize that Jesus opened the way to the Father right now. ~ JESUS HOLDS THE WAY OPEN FOR US TODAY – FROM NOW ON, FROM THIS MOMENT FORWARD, WE CAN BEGIN A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FATHER BY ACCEPTING JESUS CHRIST AS OUR SAVIOR AND LORD.

  5. Read Jn 14:8. With his physical eyes Philip desired to see the Father. ~ He asks for direct access, as it were, an immediate display of God Himself. ~ Ex 24:9-11; 33:18 ~ He did not seem to realize that a far greater privilege than that which Moses enjoyed while on earth, had been given to him!

  6. ~ In Jesus He has made Himself known, definitively, gloriously, visibly (cf. Jn 12:45). Many times we profess to be enthusiastic in seeking God, and yet when He presents Himself before our eyes we are blind to Him. Was Philip wrong, shallow, or out of place to question the Lord? ~ His question shows how much easier it is to ask for more proof than to act on what we already know.

  7. We expect God to satisfy our conditions before we will trust Him. ~ These conditions take some of the following forms: - The desire for assurance - The desire for intimacy/security - The desire for knowledge ~ These desires may be real, but God is not obligated to satisfy them.

  8. ~ Most of us will experience desires that will go unfulfilled in this life. ~ In fact, unmet desires remind us to submit to God. ~ He is in charge; not us. ~ In Christ, God has given us all the resources we need to live, to love, and to serve. ~ Eventually, Christ will help us understand why some of our desires go unmet.

  9. ~ In the meantime, we are to trust and go on. So Philip thus joins the long line of human beings through the ages who have rightly understood that there can be no higher experience, no greater good, than seeing God as He is, in unimaginable splendor and transcendent glory.

  10. ~ We have been made in His image, and however much we have defaced that image, we still yearn for the vision of God.
