  1. Status of FAIR Yuri Zaitsev (ITEP) Physics of Compressed Baryonic Matter 1-st CBM-Russia-JINR Collaboration Matter May 19-22, 2009, Dubna, Russia

  2. Observers Austria China Finnland France Germany Greece India Italy Poland Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Romania Russia UK FAIR – 16 Partner Countries New FAIR Joint Core Team Leader: Horst Wenninger New STI Chairman: Alex Müller

  3. FAIR start version as of Nov. 2007 (940 Mio €)

  4. FAIR accelerator schedule • Beams available for experiments: • SIS100 in 2014: • nuclei up to 14 (11) A GeV, Z/A=0.5 (0.4) • protons up to 29 GeV • SIS300 in 2016-2017: • nuclei up to 44 (34) A GeV, Z/A=0.5 (0.4) • protons up to 89 GeV 4

  5. Roadmap for FAIR Nov. 2007: FAIR Start Event Definition of Start Version (ad valorem 940 M€) Oct. 2008: Finalization of legal documentsthe Convention with its five Annexes and the Final Act May 2009: Cross-Checking Conference German, English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Italien? ~July 2009: Signature of the Final Act for FAIR Formation of FAIR GmbH CBM Collaboration Meeting - Zbigniew Majka 11.03.2009 5

  7. Status Expression of Interest for the Accelerators Accelerator EoIs • Components worth 60.5M€ are currently not covered by EoIs • FAIR Joint Core Team assumes that further EoIs will arrive from FAIR partner countries (France, Slovakia, Slovenia...) • In any case Germany is willing to contribute up to 60.5M€ in cash earmarked for accelerator components M€ Accelerator 430.0 Current acc. EoIs 369.5 German cash commitment 60.5 Accelerator funding is secure! 11.03.2009 CBM Collaboration Meeting - Zbigniew Majka 7

  8. March, 10, 2009 AFI and STI Meeting in Bonn, Zbigniew Majka 8

  9. Several possible selection criteria were discussed: STI chose the approach to take into consideration the interests of all countries and suggests to guarantee each of the partners a certain contribution to experiments 11.03.2009 CBM Collaboration Meeting - Zbigniew Majka 9

  11. Cost of the FAIR Start Version is 940 MEuro ( 2005 prices / CostBook 5) • Considering accelerator construction -, civil construction -, and personell costs, • only 78 MEuro were left over to assure a minimum base for guaranteed funding • of the approved experiments program within the FAIR Start Version budget. • Declared intentions by experiment collaborations to apply for funding amount, • however, to 185 MEuro and correspondingly high were announced contributions • to the FAIR experiments by the partner countries . Only France and Italy declared that they do not want their contribution to experiments recognised as FAIR construction costs. 11.03.2009 CBM Collaboration Meeting - Zbigniew Majka 11

  12. FAIR Newsletter No. 12 April 2009 FAIR Scientific Director appointed A Search Committee for choosing a FAIR Scientific director, composed of Chairman Jacek T. Gierlinski, Prof. Witek Nazarewicz (Poland), Prof. V. S. Ramamurthy (India), Dr. Beatrix Vierkorn-Rudolph (Germany, BMBF) and Prof. Oleg O. Patarakin (Russia) announced their outcome at the latest ISC meeting in April: They will recommend Prof. Boris Yu. Sharkov (Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) in Moscow to the future FAIR Company’s Council for the position of the FAIR Scientific Director. Following this, Dr. B. Vierkorn-Rudolph, Director at the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), suggested that GSI may offer Prof. Sharkov a position in the FAIR Joint Core Team with immediate effect. This is to involve Prof. Sharkov early and actively in the business of the FAIR project and to speed up the preparation process for establishment of the Company. Prof. Sharkov has agreed to get in touch with the Ministry on this matter. Prof. Boris Yu. Sharkov
