Michael G Foster School of Business, University of Washington, Seattle, USA • Founded in 1861 one of the oldest educational institutions on the west coast • University has more than 42,000 students & 2,500 in the business school • Seattle is home to Boeing, Microsoft and Starbucks • Located on the sea and surrounded by stunning nature and mountain scenery • Seattle is in the state of Washington not to be confused with Washington DC • Early finish in mid March – you will not be able to stay for another semester! • “I finished uni 2 months ago and I'm still here, it's an amazing experience and if I didn't have to leave the country (visa expiring) I wouldn't be”

Marshall School of Business, USC, LA, USA • Lovely campus - located in downtown Los Angeles (poor area) • 90,000 seaterfootball stadium on campus • Good selection of courses with lots of teamwork • Huge number of societies and organisations on campus • The sun nearly always shines and the beach isn’t far away! • “It is simply not possible to describe my year at USC in one sentence. I have met some incredible people and encountered experiences that will truly stay with me for the rest of my life. I have had the most amazing year and the only negative point about coming to USC is having to come home!”

  8. Arizona State University,Tempe, USA • The W. P. Carey School of Business is one of the top-ranked and largest business schools in the United States. • Huge range of outdoor recreational and sporting opportunities. There are over 200 golf courses in the region. Home to the Arizona State Sun Devils Baseball team. • Greater Phoenix provides more than 325 days of sunshine annually. • “The most amazing experience of my life, I don’t want to leave and am already planning my next visit here; it was like a year long holiday! ”

Goizueta Business School, Emory University, Atlanta, USA • Great campus located in affluent area out of Atlanta, Georgia • Ranked 7th in Business Week Top UG Business Programme for 2010 • Good year round climate • Goizueta Business School takes its name from Roberto C. Goizueta, the innovative and influential business leader who served as chairman and chief executive officer of The Coca-Cola Company • “My year abroad has so far been an amazing once in a lifetime experience, that has involved meeting people from all over the world, as well as experiencing a true American University Campus life”

Warrington College of Business Administration University of Florida, Gainesville, USA • Located in Northern Florida with a great year round temperature • 50,000+ students and UF alumni include eight NASA astronauts, nine former Florida governors, two Nobel Prize laureates and eight former U.S. ambassadors • Campus is home to the American Football Gators team • Very good range of courses • Lots of tests, project work – lectures can be viewed online! • “The most fun, exuberant, eye-opening, and mind-blowing experience you will ever have whilst being a student. ”

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, North Carolina, USA • MBS is the only UK partner • Consistently ranked as one of the top business schools in the US • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the nation's oldest state university, with a rich history of more than two centuries. • Located in North Carolina, nearest airport Raleigh-Durham International • Good climate and located next to the states of South Carolina and Virginia • Scholarship of $250 donated by Helen Brown an alum from MBS and UNC offered to outgoing students across the University of Manchester based on academic performance. • “Clichéd, but I've been to some incredible places, met some incredible people, and have no desire to go home anytime soon, although there's been more than a few moments where I thought I was heading home early, so make sure you're doing what's required.”

The College of William & Mary, Virginia, USA • Second oldest college in the USA • Smaller college with 10,000+ students • Situated in very picturesque historic location with Busch Gardens nearby • Not far from Virginia Beach and access to three airports for further transport • Washington – three hours by train • Good year round temperature • Excellent induction programme with pick-up from the airport • Lots of associations and clubs – take advantage of sports clubs here • “Very hard to sum up in just one sentence but probably an amazingly eye-opening experience that I will never forget!”

Robert H Smith School of Business, Nr Washington DC, Maryland, USA • New partner for MBS from 2014/15 but is a longstanding University of Manchester exchange partner • Located 20 minutes from the centre of Washington DC • The School has AACSB International accreditation – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business • Famous alumni include Google co-founder Sergey Brin; The Muppets creator Jim Henson;TheWirecreator David Simon and Seinfeld producer Larry David; Jim Walton, President and CEO of CNN; Chris Kubasik, former President of Lockheed Martin; Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and Hugo Santana CEO of IBM Mexico.

  14. Stern, NYU, New York, USA • One of the top business schools in the US • Located in the heart of Manhattan in Greenwich Village • Accommodation not always guaranteed • Expensive to live in New York and not a campus based experience • “Get ready for one of the greatest city’s in the world!”

Babson College, Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA • Smaller private college approx 40 minutes from by Boston by car – public transport limited • Beautiful campus • Strong on Entrepreneurship • Very interactive – lots of group work and continual assessment • No classes on Fridays – so opportunities for long weekends • “I don’t have words to describe the amazing time I had but this exchange programme has definitely been the best experience so far. Thanks to the international team in Manchester. ”

The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA • Very large State University in Massachusetts • Excellent Management School • Some unique courses Cyberspace Law and Business Ethics • Top sporting facilities • High health insurance costs • Coach travel to Boston and New York available off-campus - quite long journeys • “I’m filling out this form and I don’t want to leave! Definitely best year of my life, UMass is an amazing place!!”

Fisher College of Business, OSU, Columbus, Ohio, USA • Very useful induction programme • Exceptional choice of courses with mid terms every three weeks – multiple choice • 56,000+ students on the third largest campus student body in the US Variety of teaching styles depending on numbers on course – 20 or 300 • Excellent social life in Columbus and lots of Associations to join • Home to the Ohio State Buckeyes Football team with a stadium seating 102,000+ • “An unbelievable experience, undoubtedly the best year of university so far, if only I could rewind a year and do it all over again”

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA • Big campus university • Very good sporting opportunities • Take advantage of integrating with students by joining societies, associations • Big Sorority and Fraternity life • Lots of multiple tests and continual assessment • Weekend coach service to Chicago around $20 each way around three hours • “The best year of my life, it had everything: joining a frat, watching the football, playing beer pong, even a bit of studying in a great business school – Illinois is an amazing place to be and the experiences and memories I have will stay with me for a lifetime.”

Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA • Known as the twin cities – Minneapolis and St Paul with the Mississippi in between • City based campus on the river with brand new Carlson facilities • 50,000+ students with sixth largest campus student body in the US • Very different teaching style with classes of 20/30 people • Constant assessment with plenty of group assignments • Lots of nightlife and home of the largest shopping mall in America • “It’s not possible to put into words how incredible this year has been!!!! An absolute game changer” Carlson School of Management visit on Monday 4 November – check email

Sauder School of Business, UBC, Vancouver, Canada • Great campus – only 35 minutes from downtown – free bus service • Teaching – excellent and extremely motivating • Small classes – 30 – 40 students with lots of group work • Access to lots of skiing – Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains • “Without a doubt the most amazing year of my life, if I had the chance to re-live it all again I would do it a million times over – you will never have another experience as good as this!”

  21. Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada • Named after a famous explorer and known for its pioneering spirit • Located 30 minutes from Downtown Vancouver on hill-top position • Good public transport via bus and skytrain to the city • In the region of 23,000 students • Excellent sports facilities on campus and location makes it ideal for lots of outdoor sporting activities • “By far the best year of my life, I REALLY don’t want to leave. Amazing fun!”

Schulich School of Business, York University, Toronto, Canada • Situated north of the city with good transport links to downtown • Large campus with 55,000+ students • Great learning experience based more on practical application of theories to business problems and experiences – some excellent courses • Lots of ice rinks and ice hockey! • Toronto is a vibrant city situated on Lake Ontario • “The best year of my life in the best country I have visited with the best people I have ever met”

  23. DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada • Only 40 minutes from Toronto by coach, near Niagara Falls and US border at Buffalo • Excellent social programme. Outdoor Club has skiing, canoeing/hiking all year round. The Snowboard Club has trips to Vermont and Quebec. Good way to see the US and Canada • Sporting clubs are well organised. Swimming pool and American football pitch on site. • Lots of group projects and a good way to get to know people • “The best year of my life, I don’t want to come back and will definitely be moving back here as soon as I can!!!”

  24. The Richard Ivey School of Business, London, Western Ontario, Canada • Lots of case method learning with most of the assessment participation based • Long-term collaborator with Harvard • Richard Ivey is part of the University of Western Ontario based on a huge campus • Again lots of sporting opportunities • Socially the university lies in a predominantly student town with lots going on • Work hard, play hard is the unofficial Ivey motto! • “The University in general is known as a crazy party school, but the business school is one of the best in the world. It really does tick all the boxes both academically and socially”

  25. Queen’s School of Business, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada • A large university with over 20,000 students • One of Canada’s leading universities • Very large ice hockey stadium – Kingston birthplace of ice hockey • Kingston is in a beautiful location on the shore of on Lake Ontario and well placed for both Montreal and Toronto • “Incredible…the best year of my life (to date)!!”

  26. HEC, Montreal, Quebec, Canada • Excellent School highly ranked in Canada • Style of teaching promotes involvement and participation • HEC holds triple accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA in management education • Well-run Exchange Association with very vibrant social life and great induction • A very big student city – French is the first language in Montreal but no French is required and courses are taught in English • Two exchange travel grants available to MBS students for 2014/15 of C$2000 each (must have an overall average of 50% or higher with no marks below 40% in the first year to be considered for the grant) • “An absolutely life-changing experience shared with some of the most amazing people I’ll ever meet in one of the most beautiful cities in the world!”

Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada • Campus located in the centre of the city of Montreal • Always highly ranked across Canada and North America • Sporting facilities, in particular snowboarding, skiing etc. • A very big student city – French is the first language in Montreal but no French is required and all courses are taught in English • Montreal is well known as a vibrant cultural city • “Had the time of my life and would go back in a shot ”

  30. THINGS TO CONSIDER FEES, FUNDING , COSTS • Registration – you will still need to complete registration at U of M • Fees for Third Year – see separate sheet • Student Loans/travel awards via Student Finance – look up ‘Student Finance Fact Sheet FS10’ online • Contact Student Services for further advice on other funding such as Access Funds • Proof of evidence of financial support required for the US visa process. Such evidence may include detailed bank statements from the student or the parents/guardians accounts showing that adequate funds are available to meet the estimated total expenses of the proposed stay in the US. The amount required can range from around $9,000 up to $22,000 and this will vary between institutions. Information on this will be part of the application process instructions from your nominated institution • For Canada students are expected to provide evidence of adequate personal funds – usually in the region of CAN$10,000 • Accommodation, health/insurance cover, visas, books, travel, food etc

  31. THINGS TO CONSIDER SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS • HEC Montreal – Travel Grants - Two CAN$2000 grants for MBS students for 2014/15 (must have an overall average of 50% or higher with no marks below 40% in the first year to be considered for the grant) • BUTEX Scholarship – A limited number of £500 travel scholarships are awarded for UK students studying abroad in a non-European destination - apply January to May • UNC, Chapel Hill – US$250 to one University of Manchester student based on merit

  32. THINGS TO CONSIDER INSURANCE – HEALTH CARE • The University of Manchester provides Travel Insurance cover for University of Manchester students undertaking study placements. The Travel Insurance will cover you for emergency medical treatment. The policy will cover students for up to two weeks either side of the official start and end dates of the exchange • You will more than likely have to purchase compulsory health insurance at the host institution. Costs vary and can be quite high so check websites for further information • Information on health costs on UG Intranet under Exchanges for IM and IMABS:- • https://ughandbook.portals.mbs.ac.uk/Myprogramme/ExchangesforIMandIMABS.aspx Occasionally the host institution may accept the Manchester Insurance in place of health cover but this is rare. It is your responsibility to see whether this waiver is possible

  33. THINGS TO CONSIDER ACCOMMODATION • Accommodation varies across destinations • University Halls of Residence (referred to as ‘housing’) or Private • Accommodation mainly in shared rooms • If you can apply for University Halls, do it as soon as you are sent the information. Often allocated on a first come, first served basis • Please note it is compulsory at some institutions to take university accommodation and sometimes food plans too • It may be necessary to find your own accommodation – you should be given some guidance/assistance with this by the host institution

THINGS TO CONSIDER SUPPORT Additional support while you are abroad – You should declare any disability or medical condition (including mental ill-health conditions) and register with the DSO at: DSO, 2nd Floor of University Place, Block 2. – 0161 275 7512 dso@manchester.ac.uk http://www.dso.manchester.ac.uk/ With your permission, we can advise the partner University of support that is in place for you at Manchester and request that you receive support from the DSO at the host institution Attitudes to disabilities vary in different countries and MBS is not able to guarantee that all recommendations can be put in place for you

  35. THINGS TO CONSIDER VISA/IMMIGRATION REQUIREMENTS • Visa processes vary so refer to the Embassy websites for guidance and information Visa/Study Permits • USA – You cannot apply for your visa until you receive your acceptance letter DS2019 from the host institution • CANADA – You cannot apply for your visa/study permit until you receive your letter of acceptance • Visas will incur extra costs • You may be asked to produce medical certificates as part of the application process at various institutions • Your passport - The recommendation of the IPS (Identity and Passport Service) is that your passport is still valid for a minimum of six months at return date - It must be in a good condition and have some blank pages http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmblN3jO9KA

THINGS TO CONSIDER WORKLOAD REQUIREMENTS • Course choices – what kind of courses are offered • How many to take • Courses taken on the year abroad will not count as pre-requisites for MBS final year courses • You need to pass your second year in order to proceed to the year abroad • Refer to your IMABS Workload Requirements document for further information on what is required during the year abroad • You will probably have to choose your courses as part of your application process

  37. THINGS TO CONSIDER TRAVEL PLANS Do not make any travel plans until you have had an acceptance from the University and you have obtained your visa Check your visa date to know when you are able to arrive in the country PROOF OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST IF ENGLISH IS NOT FIRST LANGUAGE It may be necessary to provide proof of English Language qualifications as part of the application ie IELTS, TOEFL etc DRINKING AGE Important to bear in mind that the legal age limit for drinking alcohol in the United States is 21. In Canada this can be either 18 or 19 depending on the state

MAKING A DECISION • You are expected to attend the International Fair after this meeting to meet exchange and final year students • Think carefully about all your choices - fifth and sixth choices are as important as your first and second • Consider what you hope to gain from your host institution – large/small campus, travel opportunities, sporting activities, societies • Think about costs and distance from home • For further information visit the Undergraduate Intranet: • https://ughandbook.portals.mbs.ac.uk/Myprogramme/ExchangesforIMandIMABS.aspx Fact sheets, institution websites, feedback, insurance and information on extra health costs, forms and helpful information • D18 has library of information on destinations although most up to date information can now be found online at each University website

MAKING A DECISION The allocation of places is a difficult decision and it will be based on the following factors:- Ensuring that students take up places across all our partner institutions Aiming to allocate students to as high a preference as possible based on the ranking Taking into consideration first year average mark (before resits) Taking into account your personal statement

MAKING A DECISION • Completed MBS Outgoing Undergraduate Exchange Student Details Form • Completed Institution Choice Form • One passport size photograph with your name on the back • A ‘Statement’, 250-500 words maximum, outlining what you hope to gain from the year abroad both personally and academically but not naming institutions

  42. MAKING A DECISION IMPORTANT Deadline for forms 12.00 pm Tuesday 5 November 2013 D18 – MBS East Any delays may affect your destination PLEASE READ ALL DOCUMENTATION THOROUGHLY AND CHECK YOUR UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER EMAILS

  43. YOUR HOST INSTITUTIONAPPLICATION PROCESS • You will be informed of your destination by the end of November at the latest • The International Team will nominate you to the host institution • The application process will then commence. This varies according to institution but you will receive an email with instructions on how to apply from either MBS or from the host institution. Some applications can be long and will require you to dedicate time to this • Your application will need to be approved and accepted by the host partner • Remember where English is not your first language, you may be asked for proof of language ability ie IELTS or TOEFEL so check as soon as you receive application information so you have enough time to take the appropriate test if you need to • You must be pro-active in responding to all emails and filling in forms as missing deadlines may jeopardise your place at the host institution. Responding late could also affect your allocation to courses, housing and visas

  44. YOUR HOST INSTITUTIONAPPLICATION PROCESS • Documentation that may be required as part of your application: • MBS First Year Transcript • MBS Reference Letter • The MBS Team will provide you with first year transcripts and a reference letter from your Programme Director, if required • The International Team is here to guide and support you through the process but is not responsible for completing the application for you • Please check your University of Manchester emails on a regular basis

  45. ITEMS OF CONCERN TAKEN FROM FEEDBACK • Accommodation, Housing - Not having enough information on housing - Not all accommodation is guaranteed. If you are offered housing and you have not applied on time, you may not receive university housing and you will have to find your own If you have to look for private accommodation, please look at the feedback from previous students on the UG Intranet and refer to the host institution for further help and guidance • Method of Teaching, Workload - Intense schedules, workload, expectations relating to input and attendance, difference in the method of teaching, bell curve marking • Costs - Additional costs for extras, sundries etc. This could cover local transport, sports facilities, library, printing etc. Remember you do not pay academic fees but ancillary costs are often compulsory. The cost of living - consider the exchange rate • Visas – not having enough information. We are not allowed to give out visa information in case this changes so you should refer to the country websites for visa information or be guided by the host partner
