Set-top box. (STB). What is a set-top box?. A device that connects to a TV and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the TV screen or other display device.

  2. What is a set-top box? • A device that connects to a TV and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the TV screen or other display device. • Also known as Digital TV converter, digital recorder, ITV enabled set top box, hybrid cable box

  3. How it works • Receives encoded/compressed digital signals that your analog (SDTV) can understand. • The STB accepts commands from the user and transmits these commands back to the network operator through some sort of return path

  4. Network operator –the entity that sends the viewer the TV signal (content) they watch and interact with/if interactivity is available. This can include local network TV stations, affiliates, cable TV providers, satellite TV providers, internet providers

  5. Purpose of a set-top box • To be able to watch movies, TV, YouTube, etc. on your television. • The information above is not coming from your television itself, it is coming from your computer, phone etc. • You may call up this information from your computer or phone via the box and watch it on your TV. • With this device you may consider getting rid of your cable or satellite provider
