  1. Status of HIPPI M. Vretenar, 5.9.2005 • Changes in the HIPPI Management • HIPPI 05 Preparation • Highlights from the 4 WP’s • Status of milestones and deliverables 1

  2. New HIPPI Management - 1 • In 2006 the CERN AB Department needs to replace 6 Group Leaders out of 9. • Roland Garoby has been convinced to accept the responsibility of the BDI (=Beam Diagnostics and Instrumentation) Group (~85 people, LHC on sight…), effective September 1st. • To reduce his workload, from July 1st RG passed to MV the role of HIPPI coordinator and the responsibility for the CERN contribution to HIPPI-related work (R&D for Linac4). • However, RG remains involved in CERN studies for future accelerators (PAF Working Group) and keeps control of the SPL work. 2

  3. New HIPPI Management - 2 From July 1st: HIPPI Coordinator: Maurizio Vretenar HIPPI Deputy Coordinator: Alessandra Lombardi HIPPI WP Coordinators: WP2: J.M. De Conto (was IN2P3, will be soon University of Grenoble). WP3: S. Chel (CEA) WP4: A. Lombardi (CERN, confirmed) WP5: I. Hofmann (GSI) 3

  4. HIPPI Progress • 2nd 2005 Quarterly Report finished on Aug. 30th (46 pages) • Work Package meetings going on as foreseen. • 10 HIPPI papers (Conf and Doc categories) published so far in 2005 (less than last year because only PAC Conference). – Many reminders needed to keep the discipline… • 3 positions opened in 2005 (GSI, started – CEA, candidate selected, waiting for paperwork – IAP, published). • The Annual HIPPI Meeting will take place in Abingdon (near Oxford, UK), organised by RAL, on Sept. 28-29-30. 4

  5. 2005 Meetings 5

  6. 2005 Annual Meeting The Cosener's HouseAbbey CloseAbingdon, UK • 37 registered participants as of Sep. 2nd (total of 38 in 2004) • All 3 members of the ESAC will attend (J. Stovall, J. Yamazaki, A. Pisent) • At Care Meeting: summary of HIPPI05, report of the ESAC, meeting of HIPPI SB 6

  7. WP2 Normal Conducting- Highlights CH model cavity under construction at IAP-Frankfurt Cell Coupled Drift Tube Linac (CCDTL) Prototype (finally) ready at CERN Thermal calculations of Side Coupled Linac cavity at LPSC 7

  8. WP2 – Highlights 2 • RF Coupler for Drift Tube Linac prototype: • -Basic concept from CERN • RF design from CEA • Thermal calculations from LPSC Grenoble • Mechanical design LPSC Grenoble • Starting construction at LPSC • Power tests foreseen at CERN (2007) 8

  9. WP2 – Members • Few staff problems: • At RAL, F. Gerigk left (to join CERN…), replaced in WP2 by G. Bellodi, who will leave end of September (for CERN…). New CARE Recruitment (C. Plostinar) will take over. • At LPSC-Grenoble, no way to find a PhD student for the SCL studies. J.M. De Conto (WP Coordinator) leaves the lab for the University (will continue work, but Univ. Grenoble is not a partner of HIPPI). His group at LPSC now with M. Baylac (will be Scientific Coordinator for CNRS-HIPPI ?). • An important opportunity: • INFN-Naples has a long experience in Side Coupled Linac Structures (for medical applications – TERA). • They were present to the WP2 meeting in June and are willing to participate to the HIPPI work. They would be welcome, because in particular the SCL work is late and understaffed (see above). • Some funding has been already asked by Naples to INFN for 2006. • Is it possible for them to join officially HIPPI as a full partner (of course, without receiving contributions from the EU ?) 9

  10. WP2 – Workplan and Milestones 10

  11. WP3 Superconducting - Highlights Common work INFN-Mi / CEA to understand the large values of Lorenz Force Detuning coefficients measured on test cavity A (needed to dimension tuner)  extensive modeling of supporting systems allowed to trace it back to the reduced constraint from the support  LFD as in the “free” case. Design of test cavity B terminated. Tendering for cavity construction in preparation, order expected for November 05. Construction of klystron for high power test stand should start in September. Modulator being prepared. 11

  12. WP3 – Highlights 2 First cold tests of 2-gap spoke cavity at Orsay. Wide spread of LFD coefficient measurements, analysis done at FZ Jülich explains it with inhomogeneous thickness of the Nb. 12

  13. WP3 – Highlights 3 Analysis of mechanical modes of CH prototype cavity at IAP – Frankfurt. Assembled CH test cavity in the new cryogenic lab at Frankfurt. The TTF tuner finally adopted for the CH prototype. 13

  14. WP3 – Workplan and milestones 14

  15. WP4 – Chopping Chopper structure components at CERN finally delivered from workshop (~1 year late!), now being cleaned and assembled. To save time, decided to pass over the pre-testing phase and go directly to the final layout. New driver design based on MOSFET’s gives promising results. At RAL, complete redesign of the chopper line Architecture of the “slow pulse” driver has been redefined, and tests are in preparation 15

  16. WP4 – Workplan and milestones 16

  17. WP5 – Beam dynamics - Highlights Beam dynamics simulations and code comparison in progress in all participating labs. Progress in the field of diagnostics and beam detectors: - Beam Shape and Halo Monitor at CERN assembled and ready for testing. - At GSI, prototype of non destructive fluorescence detector ready for testing. 17

  18. WP5 – Progress and Milestones 18
