  1. Integrating learner choice & learning through a flexible framework & degree. Associate Professor, Dr Lesley Moore. Florence Nightingale Fellow, Heather Burden. http://wbl-ipd.uwe.ac.uk

  2. What is the Shell Award Framework (SAF)? • The University’s professional development programme which enables learners to gain an academic qualification for their CPD • Uniquely, individuals can choose learning opportunities from within and outside UWE

  3. Educational aims of the SAF The SAF will provide learners with: • the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills and the ability to become more productive in their current and future roles • the skills to develop approaches to learning within the context of formal study as it relates to the workplace • the opportunity to develop intellectual, analytical and problem solving skills and encourage the development of mature and independent judgment.

  4. Underpinning Philosophy: • Action + knowledge (tacit & mode 2) + reflection = work-based learning (Raelin, 2000) • Learner centred and locus of control, not teacher centred and controlled • Teacher is a facilitator of learning.

  5. How does it work? • Through the application process, learners can bring in a large amount of external learning, the outcomes of which can be mapped against the programme ‘Can-do’ learning outcomes. Flexible AEL opportunities. • Negotiated learning plan, which is not limited by institutional, departmental or subject boundaries. • The compulsory requirement is to complete a UWE work-based learning module/s at the appropriate level. • Award title - ‘Integrated Professional Development’

  6. The learner at the centre The Shell Awards Flexible learning opportunities Compulsory work-based learning module (s)
