  1. DUCKLING Sustainability Issues Gabi Witthaus and Terese Bird Beyond Distance Research Alliance University of Leicester European Foundation for Quality in E-Learning: UNIQUe Award 2009 ALT Learning Technologist of the Year: Team Award 2009

  2. Sustainability: Technology Use • Will look at sustainability of tech use by each of the two schools involved in DUCKLING, for each of: • Second Life • Podcasts • eReaders

  3. Second Life - Psychology • Academics would need to keep up practicing in Second Life (such as one did ) for confidence • Academics would need to consult with educational designer and technologist to design activity • Academics could train up new students in SL and do e-tivities themselves if they wished • Sustainable - yes

  4. Second Life - Education • Use of LanguageLab – separate, external SL resource • Flexible • Academics can continue to make use of language teaching schools in SL as a learning resource • Second Life has become optional part of CALL module • Sustainable - yes

  5. Podcasting – Both Schools • Academics from both Schools felt comfortable creating their own podcasts and posting on VLE • Might need assistance with new Wimba Voice Board in the short run (still political issues with that tech) • Sustainable – yes • Already embedded in courses

  6. Pedagogical Podcasts!

  7. eBook Readers - both • Purchase of eReaders for each student seems expensive but was a savings (money and time) from printing and shipping loads of notes • Not difficult to change into epubs and post onto Bbd • Students coming to uni with their own ereaders? Perhaps not quite yet, but many have iPhones, iPod Touches, and soon iPads… it will soon be commonplace to provide materials in these formats

  8. Sustainability: Pedagogy • Education • New head of course • Need new philosophy: integrate assessment into online discussion forum • Upcoming meeting with new team -hope springs eternal • Psychology • Podcasting has become mainstream, administratively and in every other way • Ebook readers saved so much money – every chance to continue • Second Life – bit of a wild card but very possible
