Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115 “Safety of Escalators and moving walks” Standard Family • Part 1 “Construction and Installation” released 2008 • Part 1 Amendment 1 released 2009 • Part 2 “Rules for the improvement of safety of existing escalators and moving walks” released 2010 • Part 3 “Correlation between EN115:1995 and itsamendments and EN115-1:2008” published 2009

  3. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 Background EN115-1:2008 revised to comply with and incorporate: • Machinery directives (98/37/EC & 2006/42/EC)2006/42/EC solely valid until 29.12.2009 • Comparison of worldwide escalator codes ISO/TC178/WG 5 Report (agreed upon points from ISO 14799-2) • Maintenance for escalators and moving walks (EN13015) • Interpretations CEN/TC10/WG2 1995-2003 • Risk Assessments (31) of significant hazards (acc. ISO14798)

  4. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 New structure of EN115-1 2008 1 Scope 2 Normative references 3 Terms and definitions - Symbols and abbreviations 4 List of significant hazards 5 Safety requirements and/or protective measures 6 Verification of the safety requirements and protective measures 7 Information for use Format acc. 6. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 New structure of EN115-1 2008 Informative Appendices Annex E Design guideline for safety circuits Annex F Examples of possible dynamic torsional tests for steps/ pallets Annex H Guidelines for selection and planning of escalators/moving walks Annex J Determination of anti-slip properties Annex K Determination of sliding properties of footwear on skirting Annex L Interpretations of EN115-1:2007 Annex ZA Relationship to Directive 98/37/EC Annex ZB Relationship to Directive 2006/42/EC

  7. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 philosophy: • The purpose of this standard is to define safety requirements for escalators and moving walks in order to safeguard people and objects against risks of accidents during installation, operation, maintenance and inspection work. • Escalator acc. EN 115 definition: continuously moving stairway used for raising and lowering passengers. It is not recommended to use escalators as regular staircases or emergency exits. • The same safety requirements for all types of escalators (commercial and public use).

  8. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 clause 3, terms and definitions: Nominal speed: Speed in direction of the moving step, pallets or belt under no load conditions Rated speed: Speed to move the escalator / moving walk under rated load conditions Rated load: Load at which the equipment is designed to move passengers (capacity) Structural load: Load at which the escalator / moving walk supporting structure is designed Brake load: Load at which the brake system is designed to stop the escalator / moving walk Clear definition of electrical safety systems / devices; safety circuits /fail safe circuits

  9. New structure of EN 115-1 2008 Clause 5, Safety requirements Electric installation (5.11) Machinery spaces (5.8) Balustrade (5.5) Drive unit (5.4) Step band (5.3) Handrail system (5.6) Supporting structure (5.2) General (5.1) Fire Protection (5.9) Transportation (5.10) Protection against electric faults – controls (5.12) Landing (5.7)

  10. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 Clause 5 main agreements: • Supporting structure deflection (1/750) for all • Deceleration rate for braking under 1m/s2 • Factor of safety 5 (with 5000 N/m2) for whole drive system between brake to step/pallet • Definition of the radius of curvature depending on the speed and inclination

  11. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 Clause 5 main agreements: • Balustrade arrangement: - measures shall be taken to discourage people from climbing on the outsides - access restriction device and anti-slide device

  12. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 clause 5 main agreements: • Entrapment between skirts and steps • Parameters defined : • deflector guard • maximum skirt deflection • gap between skirts and steps • friction factors between skirt / shoes (reference material)

  13. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 clause 5 main agreements: • Additional torsional test for steps and pallets • Horizontal step treads with a tolerance of  1° in the user carrying area • Secure foothold at tread surfaces (e.g. acc. to DIN 51130) • Pallets width limited to 1,65m (up to 6°) glogau/hwa/Normen/Präsentationen/CEN_TC10Neapel28.11.03bg

  14. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 clause 5, agreements electric: • Missing step / pallet device: To detect a missing pallet / step prior to the gap emergency from the comb line • Inspection cover/ floor plate switch: Operation in inspection mode after removal • Brake lift monitoring device

  15. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 clause 5, agreements electric: • Handrail speed monitoring device • Stop switch for emergency situation Review of positioning

  16. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 New chapter 6 for verification proof

  17. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 Annex A normativeBuilding Interfaces: • Clear description of the surrounding e.g.:Where it is possible for peopleto come into contact with the outer edge of a handrail at a landing and can be drawn intoa hazardous situation, such astoppling over a balustrade, appropriate preventative measures shall be taken.

  18. Escalators & moving walks EN115-1 EN115-1 2008 normative annexes Electrical systems: Annex B Electronic components - Failure exclusion Annex C Drafting and assessing fail safe circuits Annex D Testing of fail safe circuits containing electronic components
