Career Networking • Richmond Chapter:Hokies Helping HokiesChris Vidler & Rick Curry • Business and career networking group for Richmond area Virginia Tech alumni • $5.00 charge to attend • Monthly meeting, weekday morning from 7:15 to 9:00 a.m. • Door prizes • Meeting attire is business casual • Marketed via email, website, linkedin, facebook • Have had as few as 12 and as many as 100 attend

  4. Career Networking • Houston Chapter:Downtown Hokie Lunch BunchMike Strickler • First Thursday of every month, 11:30 to 1:00 • Professional Hokies working in downtown Houston • Table reserved ahead of time

Career Networking • Chicago Chapter:Virginia Tech Business AllianceColeman Jones • Mission is to provide engaging opportunities for Chicagoland Hokies to build and strengthen their professional relationships • Held annually in January • Fee charged to cover room, appetizer and bar • Speaker panel • Structured speed networking program

Networking With Local Community Organizations • Alleghany Highlands Chapter:Blue/Gray BanquetBetty Lee • In conjunction with Rotary Club and local community college – pay no fees for location • Dr. Bud Robertson draws a diverse audience • Community college culinary department researches and prepares food • Provide free tickets for 10-20 students to attend • Money raised for chapter scholarships • Advertise in local paper, VTAA e-mails & mailers • Invite other local Virginia Tech Alumni chapters

Networking With Local Community Organizations • Fredericksburg Chapter:Historic Fredericksburg Foundation Candlelight TourBetty Lee • Community service event assisting Historic Fredericksburg Foundation • Volunteers worked shifts manning road barricades • Volunteers received one free ticket & discount on additional tickets • Event was followed by chapter holiday party

Networking With Local Community Organizations • Rockbridge Chapter:Rockbridge Community FestivalBetty Lee • Chapter hosted booth at local community festival • Provided opportunity to promote Virginia Tech Alumni Association • Networking opportunity with other organizations that were involved in the festival

Collaborating With Professional Organizations & VT Colleges • Western North Carolina Chapter:Jack Davis Speaker EventMark Tokay • Jack Davis, dean of College of Architecture and Urban Studies, Virginia Tech • Worked with American Institute of Architects to host and promote the event • Hors d’oeuvres and drinks served • $5.00 fee per person (suggested contribution) • Event was also chapter’s holiday party

Collaborating With Professional Organizations & VT Colleges • Houston Chapter:Houston Area Geosciences Support Group (HAVTGSG)Mike Strickler • Formed to complement the VT Geosciences Alumni Relations Committee (ARC) • Worked with Geosciences Department to host alumni dinners in Houston • Setup visits for Virginia Tech geosciences students at oil and gas exploration companies

Collaborating With Other Local Area Alumni Chapters • South Florida Chapter:ACC Basketball Kickoff Event at Finnegan’s on the RiverEric McClellan • Hosted by Miami Seminole Club in conjunction with local ACC alumni chapters and clubs • VT vs. FSU Men’s Basketball game at 6:00 p.m. • All day event, $10 per person (children free) • Games and raffles throughout the day • Prizes awarded to alumni chapters with most contest wins and best attendance

Engaging Older Alumni • Charlotte Chapter:Pops in the ParkBill Smith • Free event held every Sunday in June by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra • One Sunday is selected for “Hokie Day” • Choose common meeting location, use balloons to mark the spot • Participants bring chairs and blankets and are invited to bring food and beverages to share

  23. Engaging Older Alumni • National Capital Region Chapter:Performing Arts at the Kennedy Center – Kambiz Rahnavardy • Shen Yun Performing Arts – Performance of traditional Chinese dancing and music • 10% discount for Virginia Tech alumni and a chance to meet the cast
