  1. Digital Photo II: Shooting with Color or Filters Objectives: 1. To learn about and experiment with color. 2. To learn about and experiment with filters and their applications in black-and-white photography.

  2. Choose 2 complimentary colors (opposite each other on color wheel, such as red and green) and photograph objects or scenes that use these contrasting colors to create emphasis. Look at the image comparison on http://www.scottpix.com/faqs/f130.html http://photoinf.com/General/Klaus_Schroiff/Using_Light.htm

  3. Choose a color and photograph objects or scenes that are predominantly that one color in order to create a monochromatic (one color) color scheme. Look at the following website for an example: http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/monochromatic.html

  4. What color schemes are used in these images?

  5. 2. Shooting with Filters:Experiment with at least two different filters to shoot a roll of black-and-white film or to shoot images in color or black-and-white mode on your digital camera. These filters can be hand-made or purchased. You may want to shoot before and after images (without the filter and with the filter) for comparison purposes. The subject matter is your choice. You may want to experiment with motion, landscapes, portraiture or still life. • Chromatic Filters (color): • •red or yellow filters will darken blue skies with b&wfilm. • •green filter will darken red objects with b&w film. • (Note: If you shoot with color filters and color film or color mode on a digital camera, all your images will have that particular color cast.)

  6. Non-chromatic Filters (no color) • •neutral-density filters: these block light so that you can use slower shutter speeds or wider apertures. For example, if you wanted moving water to appear blurred and smooth, use a neutral density filter to get a slower shutter speed during the day. The same effect occurs in black-and white or color. No filter, fast shutter speed ND Filter, slower shutter speed

  7. Non-chromatic Filters continued •polarizing filters: these reduce glare and reflections on shiny surfaces and water. The same effect occurs in black-and white or color. No filter, glare on roof Polarizing filter

  8. Make your own special effects filters: • Window screen material • Thick plastic- spray with fixative and cut a hole in the center or paint vaseline on part of it to soften and diffuse objects • Thick black paper- cut a shape out of the middle to make your own mask filter • Plastic sandwich bag (option: color it with a marker) • Colored saran wrap • View websites for more info and images: • http://www.tutorial9.net/tutorials/photography-tutorials/filters-and-photography/ • http://www.tiffen.com/camera_filters.htm • http://www.diyphotography.net/diy_create_your_own_bokeh/ • http://www.diyphotography.net/make-cool-hazy-light-leak-mystical-photos-with-a-sandwich-baggie-and-a-colored-marker/
