  4. The English Language Learner • In an Ontario school whose first language is a language other than English, or is a variety of English that is significantly different from the variety of English used in our schools We all smile in the same language

The ELL with Limited Prior Schooling • Has had limited access to schooling • Comes from a country in which English is not spoken, or • From a country in which the variety of English is different from the English used in our schools • Has not had opportunities to develop age-appropriate literacy skills in his/her first language We all smile in the same language

Success for All • Success for the English Language Learner means: • They will have the means to access the provincial and/or alternative Catholic curriculum in an inclusive setting • In the neighbourhood school with additional support from: • The ESL teacher • The SPST We all smile in the same language

  8. Second Language Acquisition • Stage 1: Survival/Beginning English • Stage 2: English in familiar and supported contexts • Stage 3: English independently in most context • Stage 4: English approaching the level of first language speakers We all smile in the same language

School Admission Student Admission (Policy J 1.1) • Proof of age • Proof of Baptism for Elementary Schools • Open Access for Secondary schools • School uniforms are required in all secondary schools and some elementary schools • Students attend the neighbourhood school unless attending a system Board program; i.e. • St. Mary’s Elementary Choir & Orchestra Program • CCH – Music, ESL & IBI Program • French Immersion at St. Anthony FI, St. John FI, Holy Family FI, Mother Theresa Secondary School We all smile in the same language

  10. School Registration Board Reception International students, students on work visas and visitors must be directed to the Board. Please contact Karen Hutchison Supervisor of Admissions and Assessment at k.hutchison@ldcsb.on.ca or by phone at 519 663-2088 Ext 43202. School Reception Students with Refugee Protection Claimant Document, Record of Landing or Permanent Resident Card can proceed directly to their neighbourhood school. The secretary will help fill out the Confirmation of Pupil Eligibility Form with information from the Refugee Protection Claimant Document, Record of Landing or Permanent Resident Card (Principal signs form). Elementary School Support • Six Elementary ESL teachers serve the English Language Learner by: • Providing direct intervention for students to assist with their cultural orientation and language learning • Providing support for classroom teachers, SPST’s, volunteers, and parents • Classroom teachers serve the English Language Learners by: • Adjusting the classroom program including assessment to provide both challenge and support We all smile in the same language

  12. How Is Elementary ESL Teacher Support Determined? Elementary Support is given based on priorities: • Intermediate students at stage 1 and 2 have the highest priority followed by junior and then primary students. The higher level grades have extensive language based curriculum across all subject areas • Schools with large numbers of stage 1 and 2 students will receive the most support We all smile in the same language

Elementary ESL Reception Process The Secretary, Principal/VP, ESL/ELD teachers, SPST, students and where if applicable, Settlement Worker(s) work collaboratively to welcome the newcomers to the school and parish community. The secretary will contact the ESL teacher & Settlement Worker upon arrival of a newcomer family They will inform newcomer families of SWIS services and have them fill out the “Consent to Referral” form if they would benefit from this service. They will inform existing school families of the service and introduce them to the settlement workers. We all smile in the same language 13

Secondary School ESL Programs • Two of our Catholic secondary schools offer ESL & ELD programs • CCH has offered System ESL & ELD programs since 1988 • JPII has offered ESL & ELD programs for their school communities since 1991Sufficient numbers of ELL students are required to provide a range of credit bearing courses and support periods We all smile in the same language

Secondary School Program • Upon arrival students are assessed by the lead ESL teacher and placed according to reading, writing, speaking and listening ability • Secondary School Courses: • Have continuous intake • Are credit courses with a • Maximum class size of 17 students • Are delivered in 5 levels (Levels A-E) • Provide students with appropriate courses per semester, i.e. ESLA semester 1, ESLB semester 2 • Provide a regular support period for ESL students We all smile in the same language

Secondary ESL Staff • Staffing levels are based on the • Number of students taking credit bearing courses • Number of students needing regularly scheduled support periods • ESL Program teachers offer • Credit bearing sections and • Support section per semester • The ESL lead teacher provides intake assessment for new students We all smile in the same language

Secondary ESL Reception Process The Principal/VP, Guidance Secretary, Guidance Counsellor, & Lead ESL/ELD teacher work collaboratively to welcome the newcomers to the school and parish community. • They will inform newcomer families of SWIS services and have them fill out the “Consent to Referral” form if they would benefit from this service. • They will inform existing school families of the service and introduce them to the settlement workers. Secondary ESL Support Roles Guidance Secretary Role • Provides family with registration and orientation package Lead ESL/ELD Teacher Role • Access educational, linguistic and background student needs • Recommend appropriate literacy & numeracy course levels • Make course selection recommendations along with the Guidance Counsellor • provide academic support for the student and educational information for family Guidance Counsellor Role • Completes Equivalency Credit Form with ESL Lead Teacher is required • Approves course selection We all smile in the same language

Secondary ESL Support Roles Settlement Worker Role • Assist families with first year settlement needs • Provide orientation about settlement needs of newcomers for school staff • Link families with school & community resources • Present needs & culturally sensitive links to school and service providers We all smile in the same language

Other Staff Roles Other staff members support students by: • The SPST is a key member of the School Based Team who supports classroom teachers with students with specal needs by helping developmodifications and/or alternative learning expectations, coordinating the students’ IEPs, completing diagnostic assessments and providing direct instructionto individuals and small groups • The Educational Assistant is part of the school team providing services at the school level to assist the teacher by supporting students with special needs in an inclusive Catholic educational environment. • The Student Success Teacher is part of the school team who supports secondary students at risk and their teachers in order to achieve academic success and improve achievement. Other Staff Roles • The Social Worker is responsible for assessment, counselling, consultation, referral and community liaison services to their designated schools • The Attendance Counsellor works with students who have an unusually high number of absences. They work with Board staff and community agencies and help with students requiring an alternative placement. • The Chaplain is committed to the development and nurturing of a Catholic atmosphere and the facilitation of opportunities for staff and students to live their faith and develop opportunities for ministry within the school community and outwardly in the larger community We all smile in the same language

  23. Other Staff Roles • Commissionaires are committed to the safety and well being of students. They monitor student activity within the school and assist them with questions and problems which arise. • The School Resource Officer is a positive link between the school and London Police Services. They assist the school in dealing with negative student behaviour as well as providing proactive information to students. • The School Nurse is a positive link between the school and the Health Unit. She provides assistance to students with health related questions and issues and is a positive resource for staff and students. We all smile in the same language
