Minnesota Apprenticeship Initiative: Building a Skilled Workforce

The Minnesota Apprenticeship Initiative (MAI) is a 5-year program that aims to expand registered apprenticeships in Agriculture, Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, Information Technology, and Transportation. MAI provides employers with reimbursement up to $5,000 per apprentice for apprenticeship supplies, related instruction costs, and establishing an apprenticeship infrastructure. The program is a partnership between the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) and the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).

  4. | MINNESOTA APPRENTICESHIP INITIATIVE • 5-year initiative to expand registered apprenticeship by 1,000 new apprentices in Agriculture, Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, Information Technology and Transportation. This is in partnership between Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). MAI began October 2015 and will conclude October 2020. • MAI employers are eligible for reimbursement after the apprentice has successfully completed his or her first 90 days in the program. Employers can receive up to $5,000 per apprentice for the following activities: • Apprenticeship supplies and materials • Off-set related instruction costs • Establish employer registered apprenticeship infrastructure

Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) • DEED is Responsible for: • Securing Financial Contracts with Newly Registered Apprenticeship Programs • Processing of Requests for Reimbursement in a timely manner • Reporting fiscal information to USDOL (DEED is MAI fiscal agent) • Tracking and Reporting Enrollment • Providing Outreach and Networking through Workforce Strategy Consultants

Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) • DLI is Responsible for: • Conducting outreach to potential apprenticeship sponsors (employers) • Developing apprenticeship programs (standards) with employers • Approving apprenticeship programs • Providing technical assistance to both employers and apprentices • Conducting compliance reviews on all registered apprenticeship programs in Minnesota to ensure the requirement of the approved standards are being met.

  8. MAI Status/Inside the Numbers Of the 1,000 Apprentices to be enrolled by June of 2020: MAI Employer Commitments 721 Apprentices Apprentices Enrolled 500 Apprentices Completed 62 Remaining Apprenticeships to Fill 93 * (186 of the apprenticeship spots are unfunded)
