  1. Genres Notes Genres are a way to categorize literature. Each genre has a specific type of characters, setting, and plot. ****

  2. Fiction vs. Non-fiction Fiction Non-Fiction Non-fiction is TRUE The events actually occurred & everything really happened Non-fiction = not false, not fake **** • Story made up by the author • Not a true story • Fiction = False = Fake

  4. Realistic Fiction • Fiction that takes place in the present time and COULD actually happen. Characters: Everyday people doing everyday things Setting: Modern time realistic places Plot: Realistic events ****

  6. Historical Fiction • Fiction that takes place in the past. The story usually involves real people or events, but most of it is made up. • Characters: Famous historical people or average people • Setting: pre 1970 • Plot: Authentic historical events, average or significant people ****

Science Fiction • Fiction that deals with the future, advances in science, or technology • Characters: mutants, robots, aliens, “mad” scientists, talking computers • Setting: Advanced tech-cities, spaceships, other solar systems, galaxies, time travel • Plot: alien attacks/visits, time traveling, technology experiments “gone wrong” ****

  10. Fantasy • Imaginative writing that carries the reader into an invented, unrealistic world. • Characters: Talking animals, mythical creatures, magic users, witches, wizards, fairies • Setting: Often medieval, time travel (magic) • Plot: Hero’s journey, often good VS. evil ****

  12. Mystery • a story that usually involves a crime or other event which is unsolved until the very end • Characters: Detective, investigators, spies • Setting: Could be crime scenes, detective agencies, creepy houses • Plot: Crime or mysterious event + clues = solution ****

  13. Autobiography • Story of someone’s life told by that person • Auto = self • Bio = life • Graphy = write ****

  14. Biography • Story of a person’s life told by a different person. • Bio=life • Graphy=write ****

  15. Memoir • Short account of a person’s experiences written by themselves Difference between a memoir and an autobiography: -Autobiography = entire life, famous person -Memoir = part of someone’s life, person not famous ****

  16. Informational Purpose: Provide information on a wide range of topics Non fiction Science, crafts, sports, articles, social studies Informs you on things you want to be informed on! ****
