  4. CONQUER fearsof inadequacy

  5. when writing, establish CREDIBILITY, find COMMON GROUND, CONVINCE

  6. aim for COMPETENCE: never shoot for a C. “Students will float to the mark you set for them.” (Mike Rose, “I Just Wanna Be Average”)

  7. Use both CRITICAL and CREATIVE thinking

  8. CLAIM responsibility for their decisions and accept the CONSEQUENCES of their actions—and inaction

  9. CONTACT me

  10. What can my students expect me to do?

  11. CALL them by name

  12. offer CHALLENGES

  13. temper challenges with COMPASSION

  14. CLARIFY explanations

  15. Make CONCEPTS as CONCRETE as possible

  16. Respond promptly with COMMENTS and CORRECTIONS

  17. COACH students who need extra help, and encourage students to coach classmates

  18. Use COMEDY—or at least humor

  19. help my students to CARE—about ideas, issues, people, their own success

  20. Enable significant CHANGE --SCSU Vice President Ron Herron

  21. CONCLUDE each class with a “Quick CAT” (class assessment tool)

  22. CELEBRATE progress and each student’s contribution to the class
