  2. Petal’s Ocular Problem • Signalment • 12 year old • Spayed female • Beagle • December 13, 2011 • Signs of glaucoma • Eyes appear to “bulge” • Sclera injected • Cornea may be cloudy • Diminished or absent vision • Tonopen used to check pressures: • 65 mmHg Left eye • 49 mmHg Right eye • Normal is between 10-20 mmHg • Diagnoses confirmed: • Glaucoma • Blind https://www.google.com/search?q=canine+glaucoma&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=aRn-T4O6H8Kg2gW4773LDw&ved=0CFYQsAQ&biw=1228&bih=772

  3. Petal’s Ocular Problem How do we test for glaucoma? • What is Glaucoma? http://www.animaleyecare.net/diseases/images/glaucoma.jpg&w=350&h=234&ei=bhn-T_iBOMWG2wXm8-C7Dw&zoom=1 http://www.optivision2020.com/tono-pen-reichert.html?gclid=COHJ2ezskrECFSVvTAoda3PpmQ Think:

  4. Petal’s Ocular Problem • Causes • Primary • Inherited • Secondary • Infection • Inflammation (uveitis) • Trauma (lens moves and blocks drainage angle) • Goal of treatment • Maintain visual eyes if possible • Control pain and pressure • Treatment options • Medication • Surgery • Remove • Insert an implant to maintain shape of eye • Use an injectable medication to destroy structure that produces fluid

  5. Petal’s Ocular Problem • Medication • Methazolamide 25 mg BID (Decreases fluid production) • 2% Pilocarpine on food BID (Increases outflow) • April 18, 2012 • Added Prednisolone Acetate drops for eyes • Increased Methizolamide to 50 mg BID • Dr. Moore examined Petal in June and modified her treatment: • Prednisolone Acetate (same) • Stop Pilocarpine • Add Latanoprost ( outflow) • Add Dorzolamide ( production) • Stop Methazolamide • *Drops must be separated by 5 minutes…takes 10-15 minutes twice a day

  6. Petal’s Ocular Problem • Petal’s prognosis— • Vision will not return • If eyes are not causing her discomfort (think massive headache)--continue medication • If medication cannot control pressures—surgery • Questions?
